अरंडी के बीज भारत में लगभग सभी उष्णकटिबंधीय और उपोष्णकटिबंधीय देशों में उत्पादित किए जाते हैं। अरंडी प्रमुख तिलहन फसलों में से एक है और भारत दुनिया में अरंडी के बीजों का दूसरा सबसे बड़ा उत्पादक है, जो प्रति वर्ष लगभग 2.8 लाख टन उत्पादन करता है। ब्राज़ील, सोवियत संघ, थाईलैंड, अमेरिका और रोमानिया अन्य देश हैं जो भारत में बड़े पैमाने पर अरंडी का तेल उत्पादित करते हैं। यह मुख्य रूप से आंध्र प्रदेश, गुजरात और कर्नाटक में उगाया जाता है। आंध्र प्रदेश भारत में कुल फसल का लगभग 60% उत्पादन करता है।

अरंडी के बीजों में फॉस्फोरस प्रचुर मात्रा में होता है और इसका अधिकांश भाग थेस्फाइटिन में होता है। इसका छिलका खनिज से भरपूर होता है और इसमें एक एल्कलॉइड, रिसिनिन, रेजिन वर्णक आदि भी होता है। गिरी में तेल की मात्रा भिन्न होती है। 36 से 60% विभिन्न किस्मों में हैदराबाद मुग्गेलई किस्म को तेल की मात्रा में सबसे समृद्ध (लगभग 48%) माना जाता है अरंडी के बीजों में लाइपेज, माल्टेज और इनवर्टेज सहित कई एंजाइम होते हैं पूरे बीजों का लगभग 3% हिस्सा बनाने वाला जहरीला तत्व राइसिन जहरीला होता है
