Rhubarb contains number of anthraquinone derivatives and their salts The individual components of rhubard are chrysophanol aloeemodin rhein and physicon These occur in free form as well as in the form of glycosides of quinone anthrone and dianthrone Rhubarb  also contains cinnamic acid gallic acid rhein acids and calcium oxalate Rhubarb yields to alcohol about 40 % of extractives 

Chemical Tests ::

1.By addition of ammonia it acquires pink colour 

2.With 5% potassium hydroxide blood red colouration is produced 

3.Under Ultra violet radiation Rheum -emodi gives brown colouration 

4.Borntrager s test for anthraquinone is given positive with rhubarb 

Uses ::

Rhubard is a mild purgative its action is like that of cascara it contains tannins and hence is associated with the astringent effect after purgation it is also stomachic in smaller doses 

Adulterants ::

Rhapontic rhubard obtained from rheum rhaponticum is a common substitute for rhubarb it is known as Chinese rhapontica in the market as it comes from china it has a distinctive odour and occurs as untrimmed pieces chinese rhubarb when examined under ultraviolet radiation flouresces bright blue (not observed in case of genuine drug)

रूबर्ब के रासायनिक घटक:

रूबर्ब में कई एंथ्राक्विनोन व्युत्पन्न और उनके लवण होते हैं। रूबर्ब के अलग-अलग घटक क्राइसोफेनॉल, एलोएमोडिन, राइन और फिजिकॉन हैं। ये मुक्त रूप में और क्विनोन, एंथ्रोन और डायएंथ्रोन के ग्लाइकोसाइड के रूप में भी पाए जाते हैं। रूबर्ब में सिनैमिक एसिड, गैलिक एसिड, राइन एसिड और कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट भी होते हैं। रूबर्ब अपने लगभग 40% निष्कर्षण पदार्थों में अल्कोहल का उत्पादन करता है।

रासायनिक परीक्षण:

1. अमोनिया मिलाने पर यह गुलाबी रंग प्राप्त कर लेता है।

2. 5% पोटेशियम हाइड्रॉक्साइड के साथ रक्त-लाल रंग उत्पन्न होता है।

3. पराबैंगनी विकिरण के तहत, रुबर्ब भूरा रंग देता है।

4. एंथ्राक्विनोन के लिए बोर्नट्रेजर परीक्षण रूबर्ब के साथ सकारात्मक दिया जाता है।

उपयोग:

रूबर्ब एक हल्का रेचक है। इसकी क्रिया कैस्केरा जैसी होती है। इसमें टैनिन होते हैं। और इसलिए यह विरेचन के बाद कसैले प्रभाव से जुड़ा है। कम मात्रा में यह पेट के लिए भी लाभकारी है।

मिलावट:

रहीम रॅपोंटिकम से प्राप्त रॅपोंटिक रॅबर्ड, रॅबर्ब का एक सामान्य विकल्प है। इसे बाजार में चाइनीज रॅपोंटिका के नाम से जाना जाता है क्योंकि यह चीन से आता है। इसकी एक विशिष्ट गंध होती है और यह बिना छंटे हुए टुकड़ों के रूप में पाया जाता है। पराबैंगनी विकिरण के तहत जांच करने पर चाइनीज रॅबर्ब चमकीले नीले रंग का हो जाता है (असली दवा के मामले में ऐसा नहीं देखा गया है)।
