Biological Source ::

It consists of dried roots or the rhizomes and roots of Cephaelis ipecacuanha A Rich ( Rio or Brazilian ipecac) or Cephaelis acuminata Karsten (Cartagena or Panama ipecac ) belonging to family Rubiaceae It contains not less than 2 % of ether - soluble alkaloids of ipecacuanha of which 50 % should be emetine .

Geographical Source ::

Rio variety is indigenous to Brazil and is cultivated in Malaysia Bengal Myanmar and Brazil (Matto - grosso) . The Cartagena variety is indigenous to Columbia and is produced in Panama and Nicaragua in india ipecac is cultivated in west Bengal (Mungapoo ) Assam (Khasia and Jaintia hills) and Sikkim .

Cultivation and Collection ::

The optimum temperature of 75 - 100 .F and average rainfall of 300 cm are ideal conditions for cultivation The plants can be raised from seeds or cuttings The humid atmosphere favours luxuriant growth of plant Roots are collected from the plant when they are about 2-3 years old .

इसमें सेफेलिस इपेकाकुआन्हा ए रिच (रियो या ब्राज़ीलियन इपेकाक) या सेफेलिस एक्यूमिनाटा कार्स्टन (कार्टेगेना या पनामा इपेकाक) की सूखी जड़ें या राइज़ोम और जड़ें होती हैं, जो रूबिएसी परिवार से संबंधित हैं। इसमें इपेकाकुआन्हा के कम से कम 2% ईथर-घुलनशील एल्कलॉइड होते हैं, जिनमें से 50% एमेटिन होना चाहिए।

रियो किस्म ब्राज़ील की है और मलेशिया, बंगाल, म्यांमार और ब्राज़ील (मैटो-ग्रोसो) में उगाई जाती है। कार्टेगेना किस्म कोलंबिया की है और भारत में पनामा और निकारागुआ में पैदा होती है। इपेकाक की खेती पश्चिम बंगाल (मुंगापू), असम (खासिया और जैंतिया हिल्स) और सिक्किम में की जाती है। 

खेती और कलेक्शन ::

खेती के लिए सबसे अच्छा टेम्परेचर 75 - 100 .F और एवरेज बारिश 300 cm आइडियल कंडीशन हैं। पौधे बीज या कटिंग से उगाए जा सकते हैं। नमी वाला माहौल पौधे की अच्छी ग्रोथ के लिए अच्छा होता है। पौधे की जड़ें तब इकट्ठा की जाती हैं जब वे लगभग 2-3 साल के हो जाते हैं।
