 METROLOGY  ::

There are two systems of weights and measures ::

1. Imperial System 

2. Metric System 

IMPERIAL SYSTEM 

It is an old system but still a large number of old physicians write the prescription in accordance with this system So the pharmacist should be familiar with this system .

Measurement of Weight in Imperial System ::

    The Imperial system is divided into two parts for the purpose of measurement of weight These are : 

(a) Avoirdupois system 

(b) Apothecaries system 

Avoirdupois System :: 

In this system the pound is the standard unit for weighing and all measures of mass are derived from the imperial Standard Pound (Lb) thus :

TABLE :: 

1Lb= 16oz (avoir) 

1Lb= 7000 grains 

1oz(avoir) = 7000/16

                = 437.5 grains 

Apothecaries System ::

This system is also known as the Troy system The grain is the standard weight in this system and all other weights are derived from it . 

TABLE :: 

20 grains (gr) = 1 scruple (-) 

60 grains = 1 drachm (g) 

480 grains = 1 ounce (g) 

                        (apothe) 

8 drachms = 1 ounce (apothe) 

12 ounces = 1 pound (Lb) 

                        (apothe) 

5760 grains = 1 pound (apothe)

इंपीरियल सिस्टम

यह एक पुराना सिस्टम है लेकिन अभी भी बहुत सारे पुराने डॉक्टर इसी सिस्टम के हिसाब से प्रिस्क्रिप्शन लिखते हैं इसलिए फार्मासिस्ट को इस सिस्टम के बारे में पता होना चाहिए। इंपीरियल सिस्टम में वज़न का माप ::

इम्पीरियल सिस्टम को वज़न मापने के लिए दो हिस्सों में बांटा गया है:

(a) एवोइर्डुपोइस सिस्टम

(b) एपोथेकेरीज़ सिस्टम

एवोइर्डुपोइस सिस्टम ::

इस सिस्टम में पाउंड वज़न करने की स्टैंडर्ड यूनिट है और वज़न के सभी माप इंपीरियल स्टैंडर्ड पाउंड (Lb) से लिए जाते हैं, इस तरह:

टेबल ::

1Lb= 16oz (एवोइर)

1Lb= 7000 ग्रेन

1oz(एवोइर) = 7000/16

= 437.5 ग्रेन

एपोथेकेरीज़ सिस्टम ::

इस सिस्टम को ट्रॉय सिस्टम के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इस सिस्टम में ग्रेन स्टैंडर्ड वज़न है और बाकी सभी वज़न इसी से लिए जाते हैं। टेबल ::

20 ग्रेन (gr) = 1 स्क्रूपल (-)

60 ग्रेन = 1 ड्रैचम (g)

480 ग्रेन = 1 औंस (g)
