SALIENT FEATURES OF THE SECOND EDITION OF PHARMACOPOEIA OF INDIA ::
1. The titles of monographs have been changed from latin to English .
2. The words of the title have been transposed to give the name of the drug first e.g. injection of Aminophylline has been changed to Aminophylline injection .
3. Doses are expressed in the metric system only .
4. Solubility is expressed in parts of solvent per unit part of solute .
5. The preparations of a drug have been given immediately after the monograph on the parent drug .
6. The test for sterility has been modified to provide for detection of fungi in addition to aerobic and anaerobic bacteria .
7. New analytical techniques such as non -aqueous titrimetry column chromatography have been included
8. In the monographs of Tablets and injections a new sub heading Usual Strength has been given to represent the strength of the tablet or injection in which it should be generally marketed .
The Government of india ministry of Health and family welfare vide their resolution no X19014/1/77-D $ M,S, dated 30th june 1979 reconstituted the indian pharmacopoeia Committee for a period of five years for the preparation of the third edition of pharmacopoeia of india The composition of the committee was as follows ::
1. Chairman
2. Members 13 in number representing academic research and industry .
3. Member Secretary .
4. Assistant Secretary
The committee appointed the following subcommittees :
1. Clinical Medicines & Pharmacology Subcommittee
2. Biological Products & Bioassay Subcommittee .
3. Antibiotics Subcommittee .
4. Synthetic Drugs Subcommittee
5. Medicinal plants Galenicals & Surgical -Dressings Subcommittee
6. Chemicals & pharmaceutical Aids Subcommittee
7. Parenteral & Sterile products Subcommittee
8. Non Parenteral Products Subcommittee .
9. Analytical Methods Reagents Diagnostic Aids & Containers Subcommittee
10. Nomenciature & Formulae Subcommittee .
The indian pharmacopoeia Committee also constituted a Working Group for the purpose of preparing draft monographs and appendices to examine the comments received on these from various sources and then make suitable recommendations to the Committee .
The monographs Appendices and General Notes as prepared by the Working Group and finalised by the committee were then published in the form of third edition of the pharmacopoeia of india in 1985 by the Government of india .

3. डोज़ सिर्फ़ मेट्रिक सिस्टम में बताई गई हैं।
4. सॉल्युबिलिटी को सॉल्यूट के प्रति यूनिट हिस्से में सॉल्वेंट के हिस्सों में बताया जाता है।
5. दवा की तैयारी को पैरेंट दवा पर मोनोग्राफ के तुरंत बाद दिया गया है।
6. स्टेरिलिटी के टेस्ट को एरोबिक और एनारोबिक बैक्टीरिया के अलावा फंगस का पता लगाने के लिए बदला गया है। 7. गैर-जलीय टाइट्रिमेट्री कॉलम क्रोमैटोग्राफी जैसी नई विश्लेषणात्मक तकनीकों को शामिल किया गया है।
8. गोलियों और इंजेक्शन के मोनोग्राफ में एक नया उप शीर्षक सामान्य शक्ति दिया गया है, जो गोली या इंजेक्शन की ताकत का प्रतिनिधित्व करता है जिसमें इसे आमतौर पर विपणन किया जाना चाहिए।
भारत सरकार के स्वास्थ्य और परिवार कल्याण मंत्रालय ने अपने संकल्प संख्या X19014/1/77-D $ M,S, दिनांक 30 जून 1979 के तहत भारतीय फार्माकोपिया समिति का पुनर्गठन पांच साल की अवधि के लिए भारत के फार्माकोपिया के तीसरे संस्करण की तैयारी के लिए किया था। समिति की संरचना इस प्रकार थी::
1. अध्यक्ष
2. अकादमिक अनुसंधान और उद्योग का प्रतिनिधित्व करने वाले 13 सदस्य।
3. सदस्य सचिव।
4. सहायक सचिव
समिति ने निम्नलिखित उपसमिति नियुक्त की:

5. मेडिसिनल प्लांट्स गैलेनिकल्स और सर्जिकल-ड्रेसिंग सब-कमेटी।

7. पैरेंटरल और स्टेराइल प्रोडक्ट्स सब-कमेटी।
8. नॉन पैरेंटरल प्रोडक्ट्स सब-कमेटी।
9. एनालिटिकल मेथड्स रिएजेंट्स डायग्नोस्टिक एड्स और कंटेनर्स सब-कमेटी।
10. नोमेन्सिएचर और फॉर्मूला सब-कमेटी।
इंडियन फार्माकोपिया कमेटी ने एक वर्किंग ग्रुप भी बनाया ताकि ड्राफ्ट मोनोग्राफ और अपेंडिक्स तैयार किए जा सकें और अलग-अलग सोर्स से मिले कमेंट्स की जांच की जा सके और फिर कमेटी को सही सुझाव दिए जा सकें।
वर्किंग ग्रुप द्वारा तैयार और कमिटी द्वारा फाइनल किए गए मोनोग्राफ, अपेंडिक्स और जनरल नोट्स को भारत सरकार द्वारा 1985 में फार्माकोपिया ऑफ इंडिया के तीसरे एडिशन के रूप में पब्लिश किया गया था।
