SALIENT FEATURES OF THE THIRD EDITION OF PHARMACOPOEIA OF INDIA (1985) ::
1. The new analytical techniques such as Flame photometry , Flurometry Electrophoresis and Photometric Haemoglobinometry have been introduced as official method for certain chemical analysis .
2. Dissolution Test has been introduced in the case of certain tablets .
3. Disintegration Test has been amended by modifying the design of the apparatus and method of testing .
4. A microbial limit test has been prescribed for certain pharmaceutical aids and oral liquid preparations .
5. The Pyrogen Test has been revised to make the test less time consuming than the previous method
6. Gas Liquid Chromatography has been recognised as an alternative method for the determination of alcohol concentration in various preparations .
7. The test for determination of viscosity has been modified by the introduction of other methods involving the use of Ostwald Viscometer .
8. The new appendix on Water for Pharmaceutical Use has been introduced to clearly indicate the different official standard in respect of purified water water for injection and sterile water for injection .
9. Some of the drugs have been renamed in this edition e.g. Acetylsalicylic Acid has been changed to Aspirin .
10. Many drugs have been omitted from the third edition and many new drugs have been included in the third edition .
The Governmant of india ministry of Health and Family Welfare vide their resolution No X19020/1/89-DMS and PFA dated 12th August 1991 reconstituted the india Pharmacopoeia Committee for a period of five years for the preparation of the fourth edition of pharmacopoeia of india The composition of the committee was as follows :
1. Chairman
2. Members 18 in number representing academic research and industry .
3. Member Secretary
4. Assistant Secretary
The Committee appointed the subcommittees and working groups in order to expedite the preparation of the new edition of the indian pharmacopoeia .
The Monographs Appendices and General Nates as prepared by the working Group and finalised by the Committee were then published in the form of fourth edition of the pharmacopoeia of india in 1966 by the Government of india .

1. फ्लेम फोटोमेट्री, फ्लूरोमेट्री इलेक्ट्रोफोरेसिस और फोटोमेट्रिक हीमोग्लोबिनोमेट्री जैसी नई एनालिटिकल टेक्नीक को कुछ केमिकल एनालिसिस के ऑफिशियल तरीके के तौर पर पेश किया गया है।
2. कुछ टैबलेट के मामले में डिसॉल्यूशन टेस्ट शुरू किया गया है।
3. डिवाइस के डिजाइन और टेस्टिंग के तरीके में बदलाव करके डिसइंटीग्रेशन टेस्ट में बदलाव किया गया है।
4. कुछ फार्मास्युटिकल एड्स और ओरल लिक्विड तैयारियों के लिए एक माइक्रोबियल लिमिट टेस्ट बताया गया है।
5. पाइरोजेन टेस्ट को पिछले तरीके से कम समय लेने वाला बनाने के लिए बदला गया है।
6. गैस लिक्विड क्रोमैटोग्राफी को अलग-अलग तैयारियों में अल्कोहल कंसंट्रेशन का पता लगाने के लिए एक दूसरे तरीके के तौर पर पहचाना गया है।
7. ओस्टवाल्ड विस्कोमीटर के इस्तेमाल वाले दूसरे तरीकों को शामिल करके विस्कोसिटी का पता लगाने के टेस्ट को बदला गया है।
8. फार्मास्यूटिकल इस्तेमाल के लिए पानी पर नया अपेंडिक्स लाया गया है ताकि इंजेक्शन के लिए प्यूरिफाइड पानी और इंजेक्शन के लिए स्टेराइल पानी के संबंध में अलग-अलग ऑफिशियल स्टैंडर्ड साफ तौर पर बताए जा सकें।
9. इस एडिशन में कुछ दवाओं के नाम बदल दिए गए हैं, जैसे एसिटाइलसैलिसिलिक एसिड का नाम बदलकर एस्पिरिन कर दिया गया है।
10. तीसरे एडिशन से कई दवाएं हटा दी गई हैं और तीसरे एडिशन में कई नई दवाएं शामिल की गई हैं।
भारत सरकार के स्वास्थ्य और परिवार कल्याण मंत्रालय ने अपने रेजोल्यूशन नंबर X19020/1/89-DMS और PFA, तारीख 12 अगस्त 1991 के ज़रिए इंडिया फार्माकोपिया कमेटी को पांच साल के लिए फिर से बनाया ताकि इंडिया फार्माकोपिया का चौथा एडिशन तैयार किया जा सके। कमेटी की बनावट इस तरह थी:
1. चेयरमैन
2. मेंबर, जिनकी संख्या 18 थी और जो एकेडमिक रिसर्च और इंडस्ट्री को रिप्रेजेंट करते थे।
3. मेंबर सेक्रेटरी
4. असिस्टेंट सेक्रेटरी
कमिटी ने इंडियन फार्माकोपिया के नए एडिशन को तैयार करने में तेज़ी लाने के लिए सब-कमेटी और वर्किंग ग्रुप बनाए।
वर्किंग ग्रुप द्वारा तैयार और कमिटी द्वारा फाइनल किए गए मोनोग्राफ, अपेंडिक्स और जनरल नेट्स को फिर 1966 में भारत सरकार द्वारा फार्माकोपिया ऑफ़ इंडिया के चौथे एडिशन के रूप में पब्लिश किया गया।
