मिलावट की सीमा इस बात पर निर्भर करती है कि औषधि स्वदेशी है या अन्य देशों से प्राप्त की गई है। मिलावट के कारण या तो बाजार में औषधि की कमी या उच्च कीमत है। औषधि में मिलावट जानबूझकर या दुर्घटनावश हो सकती है। अवैध रूप से बेची जाने वाली औषधियों में मिलावट बहुत आम है। मिलावट में विभिन्न स्थितियाँ शामिल होती हैं जैसे कि घटियापन, खराब होना, मिश्रण, परिष्कार और प्रतिस्थापन। घटियापन किसी भी घटिया औषधि को संदर्भित करता है जबकि खराब होना सूक्ष्म जीवों के हमले के कारण हो सकता है। गिरावट का अर्थ है औषधि की गुणवत्ता में कमी जबकि मिश्रण अज्ञानता, लापरवाही या दुर्घटनावश एक वस्तु को दूसरी वस्तु में मिलाना है। परिष्कार का अर्थ है जानबूझकर या जानबूझकर की गई मिलावट। प्रतिस्थापन तब होता है जब एक पूरी तरह से अलग वस्तु बेची या उपयोग की जाती है। एक आवश्यक के स्थान पर
