Commercial varieties are of paramount importance in the study of pharmacognosy of a crude drug when several varieties of the same plant are available commercially their systematic identification is of great significance Digitalis has several species of commercial significance like Digitalis purpurea Digitalis lanata Digitalis thapsi etc Digitalis purpurea is an official drug in several pharmacopoeias while Digitalis lanata is recognised by B.P.C. and U.S.P. Digitalis thapsi is a substitute for both in case of liquorice the official drug is Glycyrrhiza glabra Several varieties are available other than official drug commercially Glycyrrhiza glandulifera and Glycyrrhiza violacea are the drugs of second choice 

Substitutes ::

The word substitute itself is self -explanatory if the official drug is not available a substitute may serve the purpose Substitutes are used in place of genuine or official drug even though they may be therapeutically less effective substitutes resemble to a great extent to the authentic drug in morphology and chemical constituents Cinnamomum burmanii and C loureirii are substitutes for Cinnamomum zeylanicum 

Adulterants ::

The adulterants are somewhat similar to genuine drug in respect of morphological appearance They may show similarity of colour size shape smell etc but it does not mean that the adulterants have either the identical or similar physiological actions if they are taken internally The seeds of Strychons nux vomica are adulterated with that of Strychnos nux blanda or Strychnos potatorum which do not contain strychnine 

Storage and preservation of crude drugs ::

Storage of the crude drugs is as important as the cultivation collection and preparation of the drug for the market proper storage is necessary for maintaining the potency of the drugs The knowledge of nature of the drug and its chemical constituents is necessary for proper storage of crude drugs for example colophony is required to be stored in big masses as it gets oxidised and looses its solubility in ether if powdered while digitalis being very sensitive to moisture should be stored in a container containing dehydrating agents in several other cases storage conditions of the drug are specific The storage of squill ergot cardamom etc is specifically mentioned and so merits special attention
