(A) LAXATIVES ::
Laxatives (Latin : Laxare : to - loosen) are the drugs which loose the bowels (intestine) or the drugs producing increasing and hastening intestinal evacuation or the drugs which promote defecation (push out the excreta from the body through the anus )
Depending upon the intensities of drug effects they are categorised as follows ::
(1) Laxatives suggest the elimination of soft formed stools (mild purgatives) e.g. bran karaya gum carboxy methyl cellulose senna isapgol liquid - paraffin etc
(2) Purgatives suggest more fluid evacuation e.g. castor oil aloe cascara sagrada rhubard etc
(3) Drastics act intensely by irritating the mucous membrane of the intestine e.g. jalap colocynth podophyllum
(4) Hydrogogues produce fluid motions e.g. croton oil colocynth etc
The mechanism of action of laxatives may be either bulk forming irritant or emollient depending upon the chemical nature of active constituent
Laxatives are indicated in constipation and in evacuation of the bowel prior to diagnostic procedure or surgery

(A) रेचक ::
रेचक (लैटिन: लैक्सारे: ढीला करना) वे औषधियाँ हैं जो आँतों (आंत) को ढीला करती हैं या वे औषधियाँ जो मलत्याग को बढ़ाती और तेज़ करती हैं या वे औषधियाँ जो मलत्याग को बढ़ावा देती हैं (शरीर से मल को गुदा के माध्यम से बाहर निकालती हैं)।
औषधि के प्रभाव की तीव्रता के आधार पर इन्हें निम्न प्रकार वर्गीकृत किया गया है:
(1) रेचक नरम मल (हल्के रेचक) को बाहर निकालने का सुझाव देते हैं, जैसे चोकर, कराया, गोंद, कार्बोक्सी, मिथाइल सेलुलोज, सेना, इसापगोल, तरल - पैराफिन आदि।
(2) रेचक अधिक तरल पदार्थ को बाहर निकालने का सुझाव देते हैं, जैसे अरंडी का तेल, एलो, कास्करा, सग्राडा, रूबार्ड आदि।
(3) ड्रैस्टिक्स आँतों की श्लेष्मा झिल्ली को उत्तेजित करके तीव्रता से कार्य करते हैं, जैसे जालप, कोलोसिंथ, पोडोफाइलम।
(4) हाइड्रोगॉग तरल गति उत्पन्न करते हैं, जैसे क्रोटन तेल, कोलोसिंथ आदि
रेचक की क्रियाविधि सक्रिय घटक की रासायनिक प्रकृति के आधार पर या तो स्थूलकाय उत्तेजक या मलशामक हो सकती है।
रेचक कब्ज और निदान प्रक्रिया या शल्य चिकित्सा से पहले मल त्याग में उपयोगी होते हैं।
