    Isapgol consists of dried seeds of the plant known as Plantago ovata Forskal (Family : Plantaginaceae) in the pharmaceutical field seeds as well as the dried seed coats known as Isapgol husk are used 

Geographical Distribution ::

        The plant is cultivated largely in Gujarat Punjab and South Rajasthan The factory for preparation of husk is located at Sidhpur in North Gujarat in Maharashtra it is found to be grown successfully near Pune About 30 thousand hectares of area is said to be under cultivation for the drug in india

इसपगोल शब्द की उत्पत्ति फ़ारसी शब्द ISAP से हुई है जिसका अर्थ घोड़ा और घोल का अर्थ कान होता है। इस प्रकार, इसपगोल शब्द का शाब्दिक अर्थ घोड़े का कान है। इसके बीजों और भूसी का उपयोग 18वीं शताब्दी से औषधि के रूप में किया जाता रहा है। भारत में इस औषधि की लगभग 10 प्रजातियाँ उपलब्ध हैं। इसके बीज आकार में बहुत छोटे होते हैं। एक हज़ार बीजों का वजन लगभग 1.5 ग्राम होता है। इसपगोल का निर्यात मूल्य बहुत अधिक है।

इसपगोल में प्लांटैगो ओवाटा फोर्स्कल (कुल: प्लांटाजिनेसी) नामक पौधे के सूखे बीज होते हैं। औषधि क्षेत्र में, इसके बीजों के साथ-साथ सूखे बीज आवरण, जिन्हें इसपगोल भूसी कहा जाता है, का भी उपयोग किया जाता है।

भौगोलिक वितरण::

इस पौधे की खेती मुख्यतः गुजरात, पंजाब और दक्षिणी राजस्थान में की जाती है। भूसी तैयार करने का कारखाना महाराष्ट्र के उत्तरी गुजरात के सिद्धपुर में स्थित है। यह पुणे के पास सफलतापूर्वक उगाया जाता है। कहा जाता है कि भारत में लगभग 30 हज़ार हेक्टेयर क्षेत्र में इस औषधि की खेती की जाती है।
