 SUSPENSIONS  :: 

The suspensions are the biphasic liquid dosage form of medicament in which finely divided solid particles are dispersed in a liquid or semi solid vehicle The solid particles act as disperse phase whereas liquid vehicle acts as the continuous phase Suspensions are generally taken orally or by parenteral route They are also used for external applications . 

    These days many suspensions are supplied as dry powders which are converted into suspensions by adding the specified amount of a vehicle before use This is done to ensure the stability of the suspension e.g. 

Ampicillin for oral suspensions I.P.

Barium sulphate for suspensions I.P. 

Insulin zinc suspension (amorphous ) 

Insulin zinc suspension (crystalline ) 

An ideal suspension must possess the following properties :: 

(1) It should settle slowly and should be readily re-dispersed on gentle shaking of the container . 

(2) The particle size of the suspension remains fairly constant throughout its long period of undisturbed standing . 

(3) The suspension should pour readily and evenly from its container . 

(4) It should be free from large particles which spoil its appearance give a gritty taste to oral preparations and also cause irritation to sensitive tissues when applied externally . 

All suspensions should be packed in containers having adequate airspace above the liquid to permit adequate shaking The oral suspensions should be packed in wide mouth bottles to permit prompt removal of the suspension The suspensions should be stored in tight containers protected from freezing excessive heat and light The suspension should be shaken before its use to ensure a uniform distribution of solid in the vehicle thereby giving a uniform and proper dosage .

सस्पेंशन दवा का बाइफ़ेसिक लिक्विड डोज़ फ़ॉर्म है जिसमें बारीक बँटे हुए सॉलिड पार्टिकल एक लिक्विड या सेमी सॉलिड व्हीकल में फैल जाते हैं। सॉलिड पार्टिकल डिस्पर फ़ेज़ के तौर पर काम करते हैं जबकि लिक्विड व्हीकल कंटीन्यूअस फ़ेज़ के तौर पर काम करता है। सस्पेंशन आमतौर पर मुँह से या पैरेंटेरियल तरीके से लिए जाते हैं। इनका इस्तेमाल बाहरी इस्तेमाल के लिए भी किया जाता है।

आजकल कई सस्पेंशन सूखे पाउडर के रूप में सप्लाई किए जाते हैं जिन्हें इस्तेमाल करने से पहले व्हीकल की तय मात्रा मिलाकर सस्पेंशन में बदल दिया जाता है। ऐसा सस्पेंशन की स्टेबिलिटी पक्का करने के लिए किया जाता है, जैसे

एक आइडियल सस्पेंशन में ये गुण होने चाहिए ::

(1) इसे धीरे-धीरे जमना चाहिए और कंटेनर को हल्का हिलाने पर आसानी से फिर से फैल जाना चाहिए।

(2) सस्पेंशन का पार्टिकल साइज़ इसके लंबे समय तक बिना किसी रुकावट के खड़े रहने के दौरान काफी हद तक एक जैसा रहता है।

(3) सस्पेंशन को उसके कंटेनर से आसानी से और एक जैसा निकलना चाहिए।

(4) इसमें बड़े कण नहीं होने चाहिए जो इसका लुक खराब कर देते हैं, ओरल प्रिपरेशन को किरकिरा स्वाद देते हैं और बाहर से लगाने पर सेंसिटिव टिशू में जलन भी पैदा करते हैं।

सभी सस्पेंशन को ऐसे कंटेनर में पैक किया जाना चाहिए जिसमें लिक्विड के ऊपर काफी हवा हो ताकि उसे ठीक से हिलाया जा सके। ओरल सस्पेंशन को चौड़े मुंह वाली बोतलों में पैक किया जाना चाहिए ताकि सस्पेंशन को तुरंत निकाला जा सके। सस्पेंशन को टाइट कंटेनर में रखना चाहिए जो जमने, बहुत ज़्यादा गर्मी और रोशनी से बचाए गए हों। सस्पेंशन को इस्तेमाल करने से पहले हिलाना चाहिए ताकि गाड़ी में सॉलिड का एक जैसा डिस्ट्रीब्यूशन हो सके, जिससे एक जैसा और सही डोज़ मिले।
