 BLACK PEPPER ORGANOLEPTIC CHARACTERS  :: 

The colour of drug is blakish -brown or greyish -black it is aromatic and pungent The berries are 3.5 -6 mm in diameter globular and coarsely reticulately wrinkled with remains of stigma at apex The pericarp is thin with a single white kernel The kernel is hollow at the centre entirely consisting of perisperm and a small endosperm and embryo 

Microscopic Characters ::

The transverse section of drug shows tabular epidermal cells followed by thin walled parenchymatous hypodermis with rectangular stone cells The inner pericarpic layer is brown coloured and is made up of sclerenchyma seed coat layer is attached to it and is reddish -brown pericarp and perisperm contain oil glands and abundant starch grains are also present

दवा का रंग काला-भूरा या धूसर-काला होता है, यह सुगंधित और तीखा होता है। इसके दाने 3.5-6 मिमी व्यास के, गोलाकार और मोटे जालीदार झुर्रीदार होते हैं, जिनके शीर्ष पर वर्तिकाग्र के अवशेष होते हैं। पेरिकारप पतला होता है, जिसमें एक सफेद दाना होता है। दाना बीच में खोखला होता है, जिसमें पूरी तरह से परिस्पर्म, एक छोटा भ्रूणपोष और भ्रूण होता है।

सूक्ष्म गुण ::

दवा के अनुप्रस्थ भाग में सारणीबद्ध अधिचर्म कोशिकाएँ दिखाई देती हैं, जिसके बाद आयताकार शिरा कोशिकाओं वाली पतली भित्ति वाली पैरेन्काइमायुक्त हाइपोडर्मिस होती है। आंतरिक परिकारप परत भूरे रंग की होती है और स्क्लेरेन्काइमा से बनी होती है। बीज आवरण परत इससे जुड़ी होती है और लाल-भूरे रंग की होती है। परिकारप और परिस्पर्म में तेल ग्रंथियाँ होती हैं और प्रचुर मात्रा में स्टार्च कण भी मौजूद होते हैं।
