 PEPPERMINT OIL USES  :: 

Peppermint oil is a carminative stimulant aromatic counter - irritant and flavouring agent it has mild antiseptic properties too it is used in toothpaste and tooth powders shaving creams tobacco betel nut and cigarettes it is also consumed in the preparation of chewing gums candies jellies perfumes and essences 

    Menthol is manufactured in india by S. H. Kelkar and Co Bhavana Chemicals Procter and Gamble Ltd and several others India produces about 500 tonnes of menthol annually . 

Substitutes and Adulterants :: 

Several species of  mentha are known to contain oil Usually these oils are dementholized and used as adulterants to the drug .

    Other species of mentha such as mentha longifolia mentha rotundifolia and M. spicata (spearmint ) also yield volatile oils for flavouring purpose . 

Storage :: 

Peppermint oil should be stored in well - filled and air - tight containers protected from light and in cool place Peppermint oil darkens and becomes viscous on storage . if cooled separation of menthol crystals occurs .

पेपरमिंट ऑयल के इस्तेमाल ::

पेपरमिंट ऑयल एक कार्मिनेटिव, स्टिमुलेंट, एरोमैटिक, काउंटर-इरिटेंट और फ्लेवरिंग एजेंट है। इसमें हल्के एंटीसेप्टिक गुण भी होते हैं। इसका इस्तेमाल टूथपेस्ट और टूथ पाउडर, शेविंग क्रीम, तंबाकू, सुपारी और सिगरेट में किया जाता है। इसका इस्तेमाल च्यूइंग गम, कैंडी, जेली, परफ्यूम और एसेंस बनाने में भी किया जाता है।

भारत में मेंथॉल S. H. केलकर एंड कंपनी, भावना केमिकल्स, प्रॉक्टर एंड गैंबल लिमिटेड और कई दूसरी कंपनियां बनाती हैं। भारत हर साल लगभग 500 टन मेंथॉल बनाता है।

विकल्प और मिलावट ::

मेंथा की कई तरह की किस्मों में तेल पाया जाता है। आमतौर पर इन तेलों को डीमेंथॉलाइज़ किया जाता है और दवा में मिलावट के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।

मेंथा की दूसरी किस्में जैसे मेंथा लॉन्गिफोलिया, मेंथा रोटुंडिफोलिया और एम. स्पाइकाटा (स्पीयरमिंट) भी फ्लेवरिंग के लिए वोलाटाइल ऑयल देती हैं।

स्टोरेज ::

पेपरमिंट ऑयल को अच्छी तरह से भरे और एयर-टाइट कंटेनर में, रोशनी से बचाकर और ठंडी जगह पर स्टोर करना चाहिए। पेपरमिंट ऑयल स्टोर करने पर गहरा और चिपचिपा हो जाता है। ठंडा होने पर मेंथॉल क्रिस्टल अलग हो जाते हैं।
