Geographical Distribution ::

The plants are found in india and malaysia sandalwood tree is an evergreen plant of 10 - 12 m height found widely distributed in india . The systematic cultivation of these parasitic plants is undertaken mainly in South Indian states of karnataka and Tamil Nadu The leaves and other parts of the tree are free of volatile oil The plant bears very beautiful flowers and fruits Trees more than 30 years of age are normally selected for the collection of the oil All parts of the wood contain volatile oil . 

        The fully grown plants are uprooted and the bark from roots and stems is removed alongwith little sap wood The wood is yellowish or pale red in colour it is very much dense hard heavy and splits easily The wood surface shows darker and lighter zones it is cut in small pieces and subjected to steam distillation it contains about 2.5 % oil .

ये पौधे भारत और मलेशिया में पाए जाते हैं। चंदन का पेड़ 10-12 m ऊंचा एक सदाबहार पौधा है जो भारत में बड़े पैमाने पर पाया जाता है। इन पैरासिटिक पौधों की सिस्टमैटिक खेती मुख्य रूप से दक्षिण भारतीय राज्यों कर्नाटक और तमिलनाडु में की जाती है। पेड़ की पत्तियों और दूसरे हिस्सों में वोलाटाइल ऑयल नहीं होता है। पौधे में बहुत सुंदर फूल और फल लगते हैं। तेल इकट्ठा करने के लिए आमतौर पर 30 साल से ज़्यादा पुराने पेड़ों को चुना जाता है। लकड़ी के सभी हिस्सों में वोलाटाइल ऑयल होता है। पूरी तरह से बड़े पौधों को उखाड़ दिया जाता है और जड़ों और तनों से छाल के साथ थोड़ा सा रस भी निकाल दिया जाता है। लकड़ी का रंग पीला या हल्का लाल होता है, यह बहुत घनी, सख्त, भारी होती है और आसानी से फट जाती है। लकड़ी की सतह पर गहरे और हल्के रंग के हिस्से दिखते हैं। इसे छोटे-छोटे टुकड़ों में काटा जाता है और स्टीम डिस्टिलेशन से गुज़ारा जाता है। इसमें लगभग 2.5% तेल होता है।
