INTRODUCTION TO DIFFERENT DOSAGE FORMS ::
A drug may be defined as an agent intended for use in the diagnosis mitigation treatment cure or prevention of disease in man or in other animals drugs are rarely administered in their original pure state They are administered in different dosage forms after converting them into a suitable formulation Every dosage form is a combination of the drug and different kinds of non - drug components called additives The additives are used to give a particular shape to the formulation to increase its stability and also to increase its palatability as well as to give more elegance to the preparation .
Importance of Dosage Forms ::
Transformation of drug into different dosage forms is done for the following reasons :
1. To protect the drug substance from oxidation hydrolysis and reduction e.g. coated tablets and sealed ampoules .
2. To protect the drugs from the destructive effect of gastric juice (Hydrochloric acid ) of the stomach after oral administration e.g. enteric coated tablets .
3. To provide a safe and convenient delivery of accurate dosage .
4. To conceal the bitter salty or obnoxious taste or odour of a drug substance e.g . capsules coated tablets and flavoured syrups etc .
5. To provide for the optimum drug action through inhalation therapy e.g. inhalation aerosols and inhalants .
6. To provide for the insertion of the drug into one of the body cavities e.g. rectal or vaginal suppositories .
7. To provide the maximum drug action from topical administration sites e.g. creams ointments ophthalmic preparations and E,N,T. (Ear , Nose and Throat ) preparations .
8. To provide sustained released action through controlled released mechanism e,g, sustained released tablets capsules and suspensions .
9. To provide liquid dosage form of the drugs soluble in a suitable vehicle e.g. solutions .
10 . To provide liquid preparation of the drugs which are insoluble or unstable in different vehicles e.g. suspensions .
11. To provide the drugs within body tissues e,g. injections .
12. Many dosage forms can be easily identified from their distinct colour shape or identifying markings .

एक ड्रग को एक एजेंट के तौर पर डिफाइन किया जा सकता है जिसका इस्तेमाल इंसानों या दूसरे जानवरों में बीमारी के डायग्नोसिस, मिटिगेशन, ट्रीटमेंट, क्योर या प्रिवेंशन में किया जाता है। ड्रग्स को शायद ही कभी उनकी ओरिजिनल प्योर स्टेट में दिया जाता है। उन्हें एक सही फॉर्मूलेशन में बदलने के बाद अलग-अलग डोज़ेज फॉर्म में दिया जाता है। हर डोज़ेज फॉर्म ड्रग और अलग-अलग तरह के नॉन-ड्रग कॉम्पोनेंट्स का कॉम्बिनेशन होता है, जिन्हें एडिटिव्स कहा जाता है। एडिटिव्स का इस्तेमाल फॉर्मूलेशन को एक खास शेप देने, उसकी स्टेबिलिटी बढ़ाने और उसका टेस्ट बढ़ाने के साथ-साथ प्रिपरेशन को और भी एलिगेंस देने के लिए किया जाता है।
डोज़ेज फॉर्म का महत्व ::
ड्रग को अलग-अलग डोज़ेज फॉर्म में बदलने के ये कारण हैं:
1. ड्रग सब्सटेंस को ऑक्सीडेशन, हाइड्रोलिसिस और रिडक्शन से बचाने के लिए, जैसे कोटेड टैबलेट और सील्ड एम्पुल।
2. ओरल एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन के बाद पेट के गैस्ट्रिक जूस (हाइड्रोक्लोरिक एसिड) के नुकसान पहुंचाने वाले असर से ड्रग्स को बचाने के लिए, जैसे एंटरिक कोटेड टैबलेट।
3. सही डोज़ की सुरक्षित और आसान डिलीवरी देना।
4. किसी ड्रग सब्सटेंस जैसे कैप्सूल, कोटेड टैबलेट और फ्लेवर्ड सिरप वगैरह के कड़वे, नमकीन या खराब स्वाद या गंध को छिपाना।
5. इनहेलेशन थेरेपी जैसे इनहेलेशन एरोसोल और इनहेलेंट के ज़रिए दवा का सबसे अच्छा असर देना।
6. शरीर के किसी एक कैविटी जैसे रेक्टल या वजाइनल सपोसिटरी में दवा डालने की सुविधा देना।
7. टॉपिकल एडमिनिस्ट्रेशन साइट्स जैसे क्रीम, ऑइंटमेंट, आंखों की दवाइयां और E,N,T. (कान, नाक और गले) की दवाइयों से दवा का ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा असर देना।
8. कंट्रोल्ड रिलीज़ मैकेनिज्म जैसे, सस्टेन्ड रिलीज़ टैबलेट, कैप्सूल और सस्पेंशन के ज़रिए लगातार रिलीज़ होने वाला असर देना।
9. दवाओं का लिक्विड डोज़ फॉर्म देना जो सही तरीके से घुल जाए, जैसे सॉल्यूशन।
10. उन दवाओं को लिक्विड रूप में तैयार करना जो अलग-अलग तरह के साधनों जैसे सस्पेंशन में घुलती नहीं हैं या अस्थिर हैं।
11. शरीर के टिशू के अंदर दवाएं देना, जैसे इंजेक्शन।
12. कई डोज़ फॉर्म को उनके अलग रंग, आकार या पहचान के निशान से आसानी से पहचाना जा सकता है।
