Senna leaves are used as laxative senna is an irritant purgative due to presence of anthraquinone derivatives Senna is free of astringent effect due to absence of tannin Purgative effect of senna is not followed by the constipation The only disadvantage of senna is that it causes gripping but it is overcome by admixing powdered senna with carminatives 

Substitutes and Adulterants ::

Indian senna is abundantly available and there are very few chances of adulteration Comparatively the cost of drug is also cheap The following are common adulterants and substitutes for Alexandrian senna 

1.Dog senna (Italian senna) ::

It consists of dried leaves of Cassia obovata (Leguminosae) The leaves are broadly ovate and abruptly tapering towards apex Histologically the lower epidermis of the leaves represents papillose cells 

2.Palthe senna ::

These are the dried leaves of cassia auriculata (Laguminosae) The leaves are small oblong to obovate in shape Histologically leaves contain thick walled unicellular trichomes The upper palisade consists of two layers Chemically it contains leucoanthocynidin giving red colour with sulphuric acid 

3.Arabian senna :: 

These are the dried leaves of wild growing plants of Cassia angustifolia it is found in Southern Arabia The leaves are brownish green in colour elongated narrow and lanceolate in shape The vein -islet number of leaves is 19 to 23 

    Apart from the above substitutes senna leaves are also adulterated with the leaves of Ailanthus glandulosa They can be distinguished from the genuine drug by following characteristics The leaves are large ovate and 70 to 100 mm in size The leaves are covered with strongly striated cuticle with no stomata on the upper epidermis The cluster crystals of calcium oxalate are present near the veins

सेना के पत्तों के उपयोग:

सेना के पत्तों का उपयोग रेचक के रूप में किया जाता है। एंथ्राक्विनोन व्युत्पन्नों की उपस्थिति के कारण सेना एक उत्तेजक रेचक है। टैनिन की अनुपस्थिति के कारण सेना में कसैले प्रभाव नहीं होते हैं। सेना के रेचक प्रभाव के बाद कब्ज नहीं होती है। सेना का एकमात्र नुकसान यह है कि यह मरोड़ पैदा करता है, लेकिन सेना के चूर्ण को वातहर औषधियों के साथ मिलाकर इसे दूर किया जा सकता है।

विकल्प और मिलावट:

भारतीय सेना प्रचुर मात्रा में उपलब्ध है और इसमें मिलावट की संभावना बहुत कम होती है। तुलनात्मक रूप से, दवा की कीमत भी सस्ती होती है। अलेक्जेंड्रिया सेना के लिए निम्नलिखित सामान्य मिलावट और विकल्प हैं:

1. डॉग सेना (इटैलियन सेना):

इसमें कैसिया ओबोवेटा (लेगुमिनोसी) के सूखे पत्ते होते हैं। पत्तियाँ चौड़ी अंडाकार होती हैं और शीर्ष की ओर अचानक पतली होती जाती हैं। ऊतकवैज्ञानिक रूप से, पत्तियों की निचली एपिडर्मिस पेपिलोज़ कोशिकाओं का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है।

2. पाल्थे सेना ::

ये कैसिया ऑरिकुलेटा (लैगुमिनोसे) के सूखे पत्ते हैं। पत्तियाँ छोटी, आयताकार से लेकर अंडाकार आकार की होती हैं। ऊतकवैज्ञानिक रूप से, पत्तियों में मोटी भित्ति वाले एककोशिकीय ट्राइकोम होते हैं। ऊपरी पैलिसेड दो परतों का होता है। रासायनिक रूप से, इसमें ल्यूकोएंथोसाइनिडिन होता है जो सल्फ्यूरिक अम्ल के साथ मिलकर लाल रंग देता है।

3. अरेबियन सेन्ना ::

ये दक्षिणी अरब में पाए जाने वाले कैसिया एंगुस्टिफोलिया के जंगली पौधों के सूखे पत्ते हैं। पत्तियाँ भूरे-हरे रंग की, लम्बी, संकरी और भाले के आकार की होती हैं। पत्तियों की शिरा-द्वीपों की संख्या 19 से 23 होती है।

उपरोक्त विकल्पों के अलावा, सेन्ना के पत्तों में ऐलैंथस ग्लैंडुलोसा की पत्तियों की भी मिलावट की जाती है। इन्हें निम्नलिखित विशेषताओं द्वारा असली दवा से अलग किया जा सकता है: पत्तियाँ बड़ी, अंडाकार और 70 से 100 मिमी आकार की होती हैं। पत्तियाँ ऊपरी एपिडर्मिस पर बिना रंध्रों के, मजबूत धारीदार क्यूटिकल से ढकी होती हैं। कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट के क्लस्टर क्रिस्टल पत्तियों के पास मौजूद होते हैं। नसों
