Roots ::
Transverse section of root shows presence of cork layer with brown contents which is followed by phelloderm composed of 4 thin walled parenchyma it is full of starch grains and also the acicular crystals of calcium oxalate Xylem consists of tracheid and small vessels Secondary medullary rays with starch grains are also present Size of the starch grains is upto 15 micron .
Rhizomes ::
Pericycle is with thick walled sclereids protoxylem and spiral vessels Columbian variety differs only in one respect i.e. the starch grains are large in size and upto 22 microns .
Chemical Constituents ::
Ipecacuanha contains from 2 to 3 % of total alkaloids The alkaloids of ipecacuanha belong to isoquinoline group and are represented by emetine cephaeline psychotrine . psychotrine - methyl ether (dihydrocephaeline ) and emetamine The roots also contain ipecacuanhic acid and glycoside ipecacuanhin (saponin) 30 to 40% of starch and calcium oxalate Alkaloid content is maximum in plants of 3 to 4 years of age .

केमिकल कॉम्पोनेंट ::
इपेकाकुआन्हा में कुल एल्कलॉइड का 2 से 3% होता है। इपेकाकुआन्हा के एल्कलॉइड आइसोक्विनोलिन ग्रुप के होते हैं और इन्हें एमेटिन, सेफेलिन, साइकोट्राइन से दिखाया जाता है। साइकोट्राइन - मिथाइल ईथर (डायहाइड्रोसेफेलिन) और एमेटामाइन जड़ों में इपेकाकुआनहिक एसिड और ग्लाइकोसाइड इपेकाकुआनहिन (सैपोनिन) भी होता है, 30 से 40% स्टार्च और कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट होता है। 3 से 4 साल की उम्र के पौधों में एल्कलॉइड की मात्रा सबसे ज़्यादा होती है।
