Aconite contains 0.2 to 1.5 % of total alkaloids The alkaloids of aconite can be divided into ether -soluble and ether - insoluble alkaloids .
The ether -soluble alkaloids vary in different species of aconite and are the chief active constituents of the drug The alkaloids present in the roots are aconitine aconine .mesaconitine hypoconitine neopelline and neoline Starch aconitic acid and succinic acid are the other constituerss of drug Aconitine is acetyl benzoylaconine while aconitic acid is tricarboxylic acid Aconitine (C34 H47 O11 N) on hydrolysis yields benzoylaconine (C32 H45O10N ) and acetic acid Benzoylaconine on further hydrolysis yields aconine (C25H41O9N) and benzoic acid The products of hydrolysis are less active than aconitine Traces of ephedrine and sparteine are also reported in the drug The toxic action of the drug is due to aconitine only .

Aconitine is used externally (in the form of liniment) in the treatment of neuralgia sciatica rhheumatism and inflammation it is also analgesic and cardiac depressant Aconitine should not be used on wounds it is highly potent and quick acting poison which is rarely used internally except in homeopathic doses .
Indian aconite :;
Indian aconite roots are the dried roots of Aconitum chasmanthum it is a biennial plant indigenous to alpine and sub- alpine regions of Himalayas It occurs in the Kashmir valley at an altitude of 2000 to 4000 m The drug is tuberous but smaller less wrinkled and darker in colour than European drug it contains indaconitine .
Japanese aconite is derived from A unicinatum var japonicum The roots are shorter and plumper than European drug .

एकोनाइटिन (C34 H47 O11 N) हाइड्रोलिसिस पर बेंज़ोयलेकोनिन (C32 H45O10N) और एसिटिक एसिड देता है बेंज़ोयलेकोनिन आगे हाइड्रोलिसिस पर एकोनिन (C25H41O9N) और बेंज़ोइक एसिड देता है हाइड्रोलिसिस के उत्पाद एकोनाइटिन की तुलना में कम सक्रिय होते हैं
एकोनाइटिन का इस्तेमाल बाहरी तौर पर (लिनिमेंट के रूप में) न्यूराल्जिया, साइटिका, गठिया और सूजन के इलाज में किया जाता है। यह दर्द निवारक और दिल की बीमारी को कम करने वाला भी है। एकोनाइटिन का इस्तेमाल घावों पर नहीं करना चाहिए। यह बहुत असरदार और तेज़ी से काम करने वाला ज़हर है, जिसका इस्तेमाल होम्योपैथिक डोज़ को छोड़कर अंदर से बहुत कम किया जाता है।

इंडियन एकोनाइट की जड़ें एकोनाइटम चैस्मान्थम की सूखी जड़ें होती हैं। यह हिमालय के अल्पाइन और सब-अल्पाइन इलाकों का एक दो साल में उगने वाला पौधा है। यह कश्मीर घाटी में 2000 से 4000 m की ऊंचाई पर होता है। यह दवा कंद वाली होती है, लेकिन यूरोपियन दवा से छोटी, कम झुर्रियों वाली और गहरे रंग की होती है। इसमें इंडैकोनाइटिन होता है।
जापानी एकोनाइट, यूनिसिनटम वर जैपोनिकम से मिलता है। इसकी जड़ें यूरोपियन दवा से छोटी और मोटी होती हैं।
