Shape : It occurs in the form of cremocarps or separated mericarps with bifid stylopod and five light coloured ridges Apical half to 2/3 part of cremocarps have purplish tinge .
Chemical Constituents ::
Ajowan fruits contain 2-4 % of volatile oil about 21 % fat 17 % proteins and 25 % carbohydrates Traces of tannin glycoside and steroidal substances have been reported Volatile oil mainly contains thymol (35 -60 %) P- cymene (50 -55 %) terpinene (30 -35 % ) Pinene dipentenes etc are other constituents of the oil The flavour and taste of drug is due to thymol and volatile oil .
Uses ::
Ajowan is used as antispasmodic stimulant and carminative it is also recommended in sore throat and bronchitis Ajowan is used in preparation of lotions and ointments for checking chronic discharge .
Ajowan oil and dethymolised ajowan oil is used as antiseptic antifungal insecticide and anthelmintic The oil is also preferred as deodarant in mouth washes tooth pastes and gargles and as a flavouring agent for disinfectant soaps .

रासायनिक घटक:
अजोवायन के फलों में 2-4% वाष्पशील तेल, लगभग 21% वसा, 17% प्रोटीन और 25% कार्बोहाइड्रेट होते हैं। टैनिन ग्लाइकोसाइड और स्टेरॉयडल पदार्थों के अंश पाए गए हैं। वाष्पशील तेल में मुख्य रूप से थाइमोल (35-60%), पी-साइमीन (50-55%), टेरपीनीन (30-35%), पिनीन डिपेंटीन आदि होते हैं। तेल के अन्य घटक हैं। दवा का स्वाद और सुगंध थाइमोल और वाष्पशील तेल के कारण होता है।
उपयोग:
अजोवायन का उपयोग ऐंठनरोधी, उत्तेजक और वातहर के रूप में किया जाता है। इसे गले की खराश और ब्रोंकाइटिस में भी इस्तेमाल करने की सलाह दी जाती है। पुराने स्राव को रोकने के लिए लोशन और मलहम बनाने में भी इसका उपयोग किया जाता है।
अजवाइन तेल और डिथाइमोलाइज्ड अजवाइन तेल का उपयोग एंटीसेप्टिक, एंटीफंगल, कीटनाशक और कृमिनाशक के रूप में किया जाता है। इस तेल को माउथवॉश, टूथपेस्ट और गरारे में डिओडोरेंट के रूप में और कीटाणुनाशक साबुन के लिए स्वाद बढ़ाने वाले एजेंट के रूप में भी पसंद किया जाता है।
