ASWAGANDHA ORGANOLEPTIC CHARACTERS :
Colour : Buff to grey - yellow in colour stem bases are green .
Odour : Strong .
Taste : Mucilaginous bitter and acrid Powdered drug is pungent and acidic in taste .
Size : 10 to 17.5 cm in length and 6 to 12 mm in diameter .
Shape : Straight unbranched and conical Fibre like secondary roots are also present on the drug The roots as well as stem bases are longitudinally wrinkled Nodes are prominent on the sides wherefrom the petiole arises fracture is short and uneven .
Microscopic Characters ::
The transverse section of withania shows the outermost layer of cork followed by phellogen and phelloderm Cork does not contain lignified cells but is full of suberized cells Phelloderm is made up of parenchymatous cells Cambium is a narrow band of cells Phloem secondary xylem (hard) and primary xylem are present Medullary rays are multiseriate Calcium oxalate crystals (Microsphenoidal) in the phelloderm and starch grains throughout the cortex are also present .
Chemical Constituents ::
Withania contains 0.13 to 2 % of total alkaloids important of them are cuscohygrine tropine pseudotropine anaferine and others Withasomnine and vasamine are the new alkaloids isolated recently Apart from the alkaloids it contains starch reducing sugar glycosides and resin The plant is reported to contain a very important group of C-28 Steroids known as withanolides of which withaferine A is most important and is regarded to have antibiotic and antitumour activities .

केमिकल चीज़ें ::
विथानिया में कुल एल्कलॉइड का 0.13 से 2% होता है। इनमें से खास हैं कस्कोहाइग्रीन, ट्रोपिन, स्यूडोट्रोपिन, एनाफेरिन और दूसरे। विथासोम्नाइन और वासामाइन हाल ही में अलग किए गए नए एल्कलॉइड हैं। एल्कलॉइड के अलावा, इसमें स्टार्च, शुगर कम करने वाले ग्लाइकोसाइड और रेज़िन होते हैं। बताया जाता है कि पौधे में C-28 स्टेरॉयड का एक बहुत ज़रूरी ग्रुप होता है, जिसे विथानोलाइड्स कहते हैं। इनमें से विथाफेरिन A सबसे ज़रूरी है और माना जाता है कि इसमें एंटीबायोटिक और एंटीट्यूमर एक्टिविटी होती हैं।
