Biological Source ::

It consists of dried roots and stem bases of withania somnifera (Family : Solanceae) and should contain not less than 0.02% of total Withanolide A and Withaferin A on dried basis .

Geographical Distribution ::

Withania is found growing in dry regions of India especially Rajasthan Madhya pradesh and Maharashtra it is also found in Africa Sri Lanka and Israel .

Cultivation and Collection :;

Withania is collected mainly from wild grown plants About two thousand hectares of land is under cultivation in madhya Pradesh Cultivation is done by sowing the seeds in rainy season it needs 5 kg of seeds per hectare tatal height of the plant is about 1 m it flowers in the month of December From February onwards it is harvested by cutting 1 to 2 cm above the ground About 200 kg of the dry drug per hectare is obtained on an average The roots after thorough drying cleaning and trimming are sent to the market .

विथानिया भारत के सूखे इलाकों में उगता है, खासकर राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश और महाराष्ट्र में, यह अफ्रीका, श्रीलंका और इज़राइल में भी पाया जाता है।

खेती और कलेक्शन ::;

विथानिया मुख्य रूप से जंगली पौधों से इकट्ठा किया जाता है। मध्य प्रदेश में लगभग दो हजार हेक्टेयर ज़मीन पर इसकी खेती होती है। इसकी खेती बारिश के मौसम में बीज बोकर की जाती है। इसके लिए प्रति हेक्टेयर 5 kg बीज की ज़रूरत होती है। पौधे की कुल ऊंचाई लगभग 1 m होती है। इसमें दिसंबर के महीने में फूल आते हैं। फरवरी से इसे ज़मीन से 1 से 2 cm ऊपर से काटकर काटा जाता है। औसतन प्रति हेक्टेयर लगभग 200 kg सूखी दवा मिलती है। जड़ों को अच्छी तरह सुखाने, साफ करने और काटने के बाद बाज़ार भेज दिया जाता है।
