BELLANDONNA CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS ::
Bellandonna herb contains 0.4 to 1 % of total alkaloids calculated as /-hyoscyamine .Herb also contains B-methyl aesculetin (scopoletin) belladonnine and other alkaloids The volatile bases of belladonna herb are N-methylpyrroline and pyridine The drug yields about 15 % of ash and not more than 3% of acid -insoluble ash .
Uses ::
The drug acts as a parasympathetic depressant Belladonna herb is used to reduce secretion of sweat salivary and gastric glands it acts as a powerful spasmolytic in intestinal colic and is given with purgative in gripping it is a valuable antidote in poisoning due to opium chloral hydrate and muscarine it causes dryness of the mouth and skin .
Adulterants and Substitutes ::
Belladonna herb is adulterated with leaves of Phytolacca americana Solanum nigrum and Ailanthus glandulosa Each of them is distinguished by their histological characters .
1. Phytolacca leaves contain idioblasts of acicular crystals of calcium oxalate .
2. Solanum nigrum has palisade ratio varying from 2 to 4
3. The leaves of Ailanthus have cluster crystals of calcium oxalate near the veins and unicellular thick -walled trichomes .

बेलाडोना हर्ब में कुल एल्कलॉइड का 0.4 से 1% होता है, जिसे /-हायोसायमाइन के तौर पर कैलकुलेट किया जाता है। हर्ब में B-मिथाइल एस्क्यूलेटिन (स्कोपोलेटिन), बेलाडोनिन और दूसरे एल्कलॉइड भी होते हैं। बेलाडोना हर्ब के वोलाटाइल बेस N-मिथाइलपाइरोलिन और पाइरिडीन हैं। दवा से लगभग 15% ऐश और 3% से ज़्यादा एसिड-इनसॉल्युबल ऐश नहीं मिलती है।
इस्तेमाल ::
यह दवा पैरासिम्पैथेटिक डिप्रेसेंट की तरह काम करती है। बेलाडोना हर्ब का इस्तेमाल पसीने, लार और गैस्ट्रिक ग्लैंड्स के निकलने को कम करने के लिए किया जाता है। यह आंतों के पेट के दर्द में एक पावरफुल स्पैस्मोलिटिक की तरह काम करती है और इसे पेट दर्द में रेचक के साथ दिया जाता है। यह ओपियम, क्लोरल हाइड्रेट और मस्करीन की वजह से होने वाली पॉइज़निंग में एक कीमती एंटीडोट है। यह मुंह और स्किन में सूखापन पैदा करती है।

मिलावट और विकल्प ::
बेलाडोना जड़ी-बूटी में फाइटोलैक्का अमेरिकाना, सोलनम नाइग्रम और ऐलैंथस ग्लैंडुलोसा की पत्तियों की मिलावट की जाती है। इनमें से हर एक की पहचान उनके हिस्टोलॉजिकल कैरेक्टर से होती है।
1. फाइटोलैक्का की पत्तियों में कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट के एसिकुलर क्रिस्टल के इडियोब्लास्ट होते हैं।
2. सोलनम नाइग्रम में पैलिसेड रेश्यो 2 से 4 तक होता है।
3. ऐलैंथस की पत्तियों में नसों के पास कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट के क्लस्टर क्रिस्टल और एक सेल वाले मोटी दीवार वाले ट्राइकोम होते हैं।
