Datura consists of dried leaves and flowering tops of Datura metel variety fastuosa Safford (Family : Solanaceae) . It contains not less than 0.5% of total alkaloids calculated as hyoscyamine .

Geographical Distribution ::

Datura is a genus of poisonous shrubs of tropical and sub-tropical parts it is also found in india it is cultivated in Europe .

Cultivation and Collection ::

The drug is cultivated by sowing the seeds The germination rate of the seeds is poor if the seeds are soaked in water and kept overnight the rate of germination increases .About 7 to 8 kg of the seeds per hectare are required for sowing The seeds take about 15 to 20 days for germination Weeding and thining are necessary and performed when the plants reach about 10 to 15 cm in height The distance kept in between two plants is about 75 to 100 cm The drug is collected after four months of its cultivation The leaves and branches are removed the drug is dried in the sun and marketed by packing in gunny bags .

धतूरा में धतूरा मेटेल वैरायटी फास्टुओसा सैफर्ड (फैमिली: सोलानेसी) की सूखी पत्तियां और फूलों के ऊपरी हिस्से होते हैं। इसमें हायोसायमाइन के रूप में कैलकुलेट किए गए कुल एल्कलॉइड का कम से कम 0.5% होता है।

धतूरा ट्रॉपिकल और सब-ट्रॉपिकल हिस्सों की ज़हरीली झाड़ियों का एक जीनस है, यह भारत में भी पाया जाता है, इसकी खेती यूरोप में की जाती है। 

खेती और संग्रह ::

इस दवा की खेती बीज बोकर की जाती है. बीजों के अंकुरण की दर कम होती है. अगर बीजों को पानी में भिगोकर रात भर रखा जाए तो अंकुरण की दर बढ़ जाती है. बुवाई के लिए प्रति हेक्टेयर लगभग 7 से 8 kg बीज की ज़रूरत होती है. बीजों को अंकुरित होने में लगभग 15 से 20 दिन लगते हैं. जब पौधे लगभग 10 से 15 cm ऊंचे हो जाएं, तो निराई और गुड़ाई ज़रूरी होती है. दो पौधों के बीच लगभग 75 से 100 cm की दूरी रखी जाती है. दवा की खेती के चार महीने बाद उसे इकट्ठा किया जाता है. पत्तियों और डालियों को हटा दिया जाता है. दवा को धूप में सुखाया जाता है और बोरियों में पैक करके बेचा जाता है.
