DRUGS ACTING ON CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM ::
The central nervous system is composed of main two portions called brain and spinal cord Brain is comprised of cerebrum cerebellum and medulla oblongata The central nervous system is associated with all the voluntary actions and their co-ordination it is well linked with autonomic nervous system for various interactions many of the responses are due to the proper co-ordination between autonomic and central nervous systems .
The different natural drugs effective on CNS with their general mode of activity are given below :
A. Analeptics ::
1. Lobeline from leaves of Lobelia nicotianifolia .
2. Picrotoxin from berries of Anamirta cocculus .
3. Strychnine from seeds of Strychnous nux vomica .
B. Drugs affecting mental activity ::
(1) Stimulants : Caffeine from tea coffee kola
(2) Depressants : Reserpine from the roots and rhizomes of various Rauwolfia species .
(3) Hallucinogenics : Tetrahydrocannabinol from leaves of Cannabis sativa
C. Central depressants of motor functions ::
Tropane alkaloids like hyoscine atropine from belladonna hyoscyamus and datura
D. Analgesics ::
Morphine and codeine from Papaver somniferum .

केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्र पर कार्य करने वाली औषधियाँ:
केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्र मुख्यतः दो भागों से बना होता है जिन्हें मस्तिष्क और मेरुमज्जा कहते हैं। मस्तिष्क सेरिब्रम, सेरिबैलम और मेडुला ऑबोंगटा से बना होता है। केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्र सभी स्वैच्छिक क्रियाओं और उनके समन्वय से जुड़ा होता है। यह विभिन्न अंतःक्रियाओं के लिए स्वायत्त तंत्रिका तंत्र से अच्छी तरह जुड़ा होता है। कई प्रतिक्रियाएँ स्वायत्त और केंद्रीय तंत्रिका तंत्रों के बीच उचित समन्वय के कारण होती हैं।

2. एनामिर्टा कोकुलस के जामुन से पिक्रोटॉक्सिन।
3. स्ट्राइक्नस नक्स वोमिका के बीजों से स्ट्राइकिन।
B. मानसिक गतिविधि को प्रभावित करने वाली दवाएँ:
(1) उत्तेजक: चाय/कॉफ़ी कोला से प्राप्त कैफीन
(2) अवसादक: विभिन्न राउवोल्फिया प्रजातियों की जड़ों और प्रकंदों से प्राप्त रेसर्पाइन।
(3) मतिभ्रमकारी: कैनाबिस सैटिवा की पत्तियों से प्राप्त टेट्राहाइड्रोकैनाबिनोल।
C. मोटर कार्यों के केंद्रीय अवसादक:
बेलाडोना हायोसायमस और धतूरा से प्राप्त हायोसिन एट्रोपिन जैसे ट्रोपेन एल्कलॉइड।
D. दर्दनाशक:
पापावर सोम्निफेरम से प्राप्त मॉर्फिन और कोडीन।
