Biological Source ::

Balsam of tolu is solid or semi-solid balsam obtained from the trunk of Myroxylon balsamum Linn belonging to family Leguminosae it contains not less than 35 % and not more than 50% of total balsamic acids calculated as cinnamic acid on dry ethenol soluble matter .

Geographical Distribution ::

It is indigenous to Columbia and collected in west indies and Cuba Tolu is the name of place on the North Coast of Columbia near Cartagena and hence the name of the drug 

Collection ::

It is a pathological product secreted in Cortex of young twigs it is collected by making V-shaped incisions in bark The drug is collected ir calabash cups and transferred to tin containers .

Colour : yellowish or brownish - yellow to brown 

Odour : aromatic and vanilla like 

Taste : aromatic

It is a tenacious mass becoming harder and finally brittle it darkens on keeping .

टोलू का बालसम एक सॉलिड या सेमी-सॉलिड बालसम है जो लेगुमिनोसे परिवार से संबंधित मायरोक्सिलॉन बालसमम लिन के तने से मिलता है। इसमें सूखे एथेनॉल में घुलनशील पदार्थ पर सिनामिक एसिड के रूप में कैलकुलेट किए गए कुल बाल्समिक एसिड का 35% से कम और 50% से ज़्यादा नहीं होता है।

यह कोलंबिया का मूल निवासी है और वेस्ट इंडीज और क्यूबा में इकट्ठा किया जाता है। टोलू कोलंबिया के नॉर्थ कोस्ट पर कार्टाजेना के पास एक जगह का नाम है और इसलिए इस दवा का नाम टोलू पड़ा।

यह एक पैथोलॉजिकल प्रोडक्ट है जो नई टहनियों के कॉर्टेक्स में निकलता है। इसे छाल में V-आकार के चीरे लगाकर इकट्ठा किया जाता है। दवा को कैलाश कप में इकट्ठा किया जाता है और टिन के कंटेनर में ट्रांसफर किया जाता है।
