Cinchona is the dried bark of cultivated trees of Cinchona calisaya wedd Cinchona ledgeriana Moens Cinchona officinalis Linn Cinchona succirubra Pav etc or hybrid of either of the last two species with either of the first two (Family : Rubiaceae) it contains not less than 6 per cent of total alkaloids of cinchona .

History :: 

The term cinchona is said to be derived from Countess of Chichon wife of Viceroy of peru who was believed to be cured in 1638 from fever by the use of this bark

The countries producing the drug on commercial scale are Tanzania Bolivia Columbia Ecuador Guatemala indonesia Zaire kenya Sri lanka and india At present most of the world requirement is met by Zaire and Indonesia Approximately 5 thousand tonnes of cinchona bark is processed annually to produce alkaloids all over the world in india it is being cultivated in Tamil Nadu West Bengal Karnataka Assam and Sikkim Approximately 5 thousand hectares of the land is under cultivation of cinchona in India of which about 2500 hectares is in Tamil Nadu .

    In India Cinchona is cultivated in Annamallai Hills (Coimbatore district and Nilgiri Hills (Nilgiri district ) in Tamil Nadu it is also cultivated in Darjeeling district of west Bengal The Government factories extracting cinchona alkaloids are situated at Mungpoo (West Bengal ) and Annamallais in Tamil nadu .

इतिहास ::

कहा जाता है कि सिनकोना शब्द पेरू के वायसराय की पत्नी काउंटेस ऑफ़ चिचोन से लिया गया है, माना जाता है कि 1638 में इस छाल के इस्तेमाल से बुखार ठीक हो गया था।

भौगोलिक स्रोत ::

कमर्शियल लेवल पर इस दवा का प्रोडक्शन करने वाले देश हैं: तंजानिया, बोलीविया, कोलंबिया, इक्वाडोर, ग्वाटेमाला, इंडोनेशिया, ज़ैरे, केन्या, श्रीलंका और भारत। अभी दुनिया की ज़्यादातर ज़रूरत ज़ैरे और इंडोनेशिया से पूरी होती है। पूरी दुनिया में एल्कलॉइड बनाने के लिए हर साल लगभग 5 हज़ार टन सिनकोना छाल को प्रोसेस किया जाता है। भारत में इसकी खेती तमिलनाडु, पश्चिम बंगाल, कर्नाटक, असम और सिक्किम में की जाती है। भारत में लगभग 5 हज़ार हेक्टेयर ज़मीन पर सिनकोना की खेती होती है, जिसमें से लगभग 2500 हेक्टेयर तमिलनाडु में है। भारत में सिनकोना की खेती तमिलनाडु में अन्नामलाई हिल्स (कोयंबटूर जिला) और नीलगिरी हिल्स (नीलगिरी जिला) में की जाती है। इसकी खेती पश्चिम बंगाल के दार्जिलिंग जिले में भी की जाती है। सिनकोना एल्कलॉइड निकालने वाली सरकारी फैक्ट्रियां तमिलनाडु के मुंगपू (पश्चिम बंगाल) और अन्नामलाई में हैं।
