नीम के पेड़ के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में अलग-अलग तत्व होते हैं। इनमें एक्टिव तत्व हैं एज़ाडिरेक्टिन, सैलानिन और मेलियन्ट्रियोल। नीम की पत्तियों में निंबोस्टेरॉल और क्वेरसेटिन होते हैं। बीजों में एज़ाडिरेक्टिन, सैलानिन, मेलियन्ट्रोल और मेलियासिन होते हैं। तने की छाल में निम्बिन, निम्बिनिन, निम्बिडिन, निंबोस्टेरॉल और मार्गोसिन नाम का एक कड़वा तत्व होता है। नीम का तेल बीजों से निकाला जाता है और इसमें मुख्य रूप से ओलिक (50%) और स्टीयरिक (20%) एसिड के ग्लिसराइड होते हैं।

नीम की पत्तियों और नीम के तेल का इस्तेमाल मुख्य रूप से एंटीसेप्टिक और कीटनाशक के तौर पर किया जाता है। नीम का तेल, निम्बिन और निम्बिडिन कई तरह के फंगस के खिलाफ एक्टिव होते हैं। एंटी-कीट गुणों को वैपसाइड और मार्गोसाइड के रूप में कमर्शियलाइज़ किया गया है। दवा को एंटीफर्टिलिटी और एंटी-वायरल गुण भी दिए गए हैं और AIDS के इलाज में इसके असर की जांच की जा रही है।
