 PEPPERMINT OIL CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS ::

Peppermint oil contains chiefly l - menthol to the extent of 70% in free as well as in the form of esters depending upon variety ( like American japanese indian ) other important constituents of the peppermint oil are menthone menthyl acetate and several other terpene derivatives The other terpenes include l- limonene isopulegone cineole pinene camphene etc 

        Mentha oil is obtained by steam distillation from mentha arvensis var piperascens (japanese mint ) (family : Labiateae ) Commercially cultivated in U.P. Himachal Pradesh Punjab Haryana Jammu and Kashmir and Central India it is also cultivated in japan Brazil and California . it contains about 80% menthol 

Chemical tast ::

Few drops of peppermint oil are mixed with 5 ml of nitric acid solution (prepared by adding 1 ml of nitric acid to 300 ml glacial acetic acid ) Heat on water bath within five minutes liquid develops a blue colour which on further heating deepens and shows copper coloured fluorescence after some time it becomes golden yellow

पेपरमिंट ऑयल में मुख्य रूप से 70% तक एल-मेन्थॉल होता है, जो फ्री में और वैरायटी के आधार पर एस्टर के रूप में भी होता है (जैसे अमेरिकन, जापानी, इंडियन)। पेपरमिंट ऑयल के दूसरे ज़रूरी तत्व मेंथोन, मेंथिल एसीटेट और कई दूसरे टरपीन डेरिवेटिव हैं। दूसरे टरपीन में एल-लिमोनेन, आइसोपुलेगोन, सिनेओल, पिनीन, कैम्फेन वगैरह शामिल हैं।

मेंथा ऑयल, मेंथा आर्वेन्सिस वर पिपरसेंस (जापानी मिंट) (फैमिली: लैबिएटी) से स्टीम डिस्टिलेशन से मिलता है। कमर्शियली इसकी खेती यूपी, हिमाचल प्रदेश, पंजाब, हरियाणा, जम्मू-कश्मीर और सेंट्रल इंडिया में होती है। इसकी खेती जापान, ब्राजील और कैलिफोर्निया में भी होती है। इसमें लगभग 80% मेंथॉल होता है।

केमिकल टेस्ट ::

पेपरमिंट ऑयल की कुछ बूंदें 5 ml नाइट्रिक एसिड सॉल्यूशन (300 ml ग्लेशियल एसिटिक एसिड में 1 ml नाइट्रिक एसिड मिलाकर बनाया गया) में मिलाई जाती हैं। पानी में गर्म करने पर पांच मिनट में लिक्विड का रंग नीला हो जाता है, जो और गर्म करने पर गहरा हो जाता है और कॉपर कलर का फ्लोरेसेंस दिखाता है, कुछ देर बाद यह सुनहरा पीला हो जाता है।
