The main product of sandal wood is the volatile oil (2.5 %) called sandal wood oil All the wood elements of this drug contain oil Sandal wood oil contains about 95 % of two isomeric sesquiterpene alcohols a-santalol ( b.p . 300 - 301 ,C ) and B - santalol ( b.p. 170 - 171 .C ) The oil also contains an aldehyde santalal C15H22O . Santene santenone teresantol .
Uses ::
It is used as a source of sandal wood oil The oil is used for symptomatic treatment of dysurea and in diminishing the frequency of micturition marked in the tuberculosis of the bladder The oil is mainly used as a perfume in cosmetics and incense sticks The wood is utilised for other purposes like carvings and manufacture of boxes .
Sandal wood oil ::
It is pale yellow colourless viscid liquid unpleasant in taste and with characteristic persistant flavour it is soluble in alcohol and chloroform while insoluble in water sandal wood oil has following standards .
Specific gravity : 0.973 to 0.985
Optical rotation : - 15 to - 20.
Refractive index : 1.500 to 1.510
Esters : Not less than 2.0 % as santolyl acetate .
Alcohols : Not less than 90% as santalol .

इस्तेमाल ::
इसका इस्तेमाल चंदन के तेल के सोर्स के तौर पर किया जाता है। तेल का इस्तेमाल पेशाब में जलन के लक्षणों के इलाज और ब्लैडर के ट्यूबरकुलोसिस में पेशाब आने की फ्रीक्वेंसी को कम करने के लिए किया जाता है। तेल का इस्तेमाल मुख्य रूप से कॉस्मेटिक्स और अगरबत्ती में परफ्यूम के तौर पर किया जाता है। लकड़ी का इस्तेमाल नक्काशी और बक्से बनाने जैसे दूसरे कामों के लिए भी किया जाता है।
चंदन का तेल ::
यह हल्का पीला, रंगहीन, चिपचिपा लिक्विड होता है जिसका स्वाद अच्छा नहीं होता और इसका खास स्वाद हमेशा बना रहता है। यह अल्कोहल और क्लोरोफॉर्म में घुलता है जबकि पानी में नहीं घुलता। चंदन के तेल के ये स्टैंडर्ड हैं।
