SODIUM ALGINATE IDENTIFICATION ::
1. The aqueous solution of sodium alginate forms copious precipitate with calcium chloride solution .
2. 1% solution in water forms heavy gelatinous precipitate with dilute sulphuric acid .
Uses ::
High and medium viscosity grades of sodium alginate are used in preparation of paste creams and for thickening and stabilizing emulsions it is a good suspending and thickening agent but a poor emulsifying agent it is used as binding and disintegrating agent in tablets and lozengens in food industry it is used for preparation of jellies ice creams etc it is also used in textile industry for pharmaceutical purposes when desired it is sterilized by heating in an auctoclave Potassium aluminium and calcium alginates are also used medicinally .
Storage ::
The solution of sodium alginate should not be stored in metal containers it is preserved by addition of 0.1 % of chloroxylenol chlorocresol benzoic acid or parabenes .

इस्तेमाल ::
सोडियम एल्जिनेट के हाई और मीडियम विस्कोसिटी ग्रेड का इस्तेमाल पेस्ट क्रीम बनाने और इमल्शन को गाढ़ा और स्टेबल करने में किया जाता है। यह एक अच्छा सस्पेंडिंग और गाढ़ा करने वाला एजेंट है, लेकिन एक खराब इमल्सीफाइंग एजेंट है। इसका इस्तेमाल टैबलेट और लोज़ेंजेन में बाइंडिंग और डिसइंटीग्रेटिंग एजेंट के तौर पर किया जाता है। फूड इंडस्ट्री में इसका इस्तेमाल जेली, आइसक्रीम वगैरह बनाने के लिए किया जाता है। इसका इस्तेमाल टेक्सटाइल इंडस्ट्री में भी फार्मास्यूटिकल कामों के लिए किया जाता है। जब ज़रूरत हो, तो इसे ऑक्टोक्लेव में गर्म करके स्टेरिलाइज़ किया जाता है। पोटेशियम, एल्युमिनियम और कैल्शियम एल्जिनेट का भी दवा के तौर पर इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।
स्टोरेज ::
सोडियम एल्जिनेट के सॉल्यूशन को मेटल के कंटेनर में स्टोर नहीं करना चाहिए, इसे 0.1% क्लोरोक्सीलेनॉल, क्लोरोक्रेसोल, बेंजोइक एसिड या पैराबीन्स मिलाकर प्रिजर्व किया जाता है।
