SEMI SOLID DOSAGE FORMS ::
Semi solid dosage forms are mainly meant for external application e.g. ointments creams pastes jellies etc The suppositories are also included in this category althought these are unit dosage forms .
Ointments ::
Ointments are semi solid preparations meant for application to the skin or mucous membrane They usually contain a medicament or medicaments dissolved suspended or emulsified in the ointment base They may contain a suitable antimicrobial preservative The ointments are mainly used as protective or emollient for the skin The medicated ointments are meant for action on epidermis or for action on deeper layers of cutaneous tissues or to pencetrate deep and release medicaments to body fluids .
The ointments which are meant for application to the eye are called Ophthalmic Ointments These ointments are sterile and free from irritation in the preparation of these ointments the yellow soft paraffin is used instead of white soft paraffin the reason for this being that white soft paraffin may contain small traces of the bleaching agent which are generally left over after bleaching the yellow soft paraffin Hence the white soft paraffin may cause irritation to the eye .
White selecting a suitable ointment base the factors such as the action desired nature of the medicament to be incorporated and the stability of an ointment are to be considered An ideal ointment base should possess the following properties :
(1) It should be inert odourless and smooth .
(2) It should be physically and chemically stable .
(3) It should be compatible with the skin and with the incorporated medicaments .
(4) It should be of such a consistency that it spreads and softens when applied to the skin with stress .
(5) It should not retard healing of the wound .
(6) It should not produce irritation or sensitisation of the skin .
There is no single ointment base which possesses all the qualities of an ideal ointment base So it becomes necessary to use more than one ointment base in the preparation of ointments The ointment bases are classified into :
1. Oleaginous bases
2. Absorption bases
3. Emulsion bases
4. water soluble bases .

ऑइंटमेंट ::
ऑइंटमेंट सेमी सॉलिड तैयारी होती है जो स्किन या म्यूकस मेम्ब्रेन पर लगाने के लिए होती है। इनमें आमतौर पर ऑइंटमेंट बेस में घुली हुई, सस्पेंडेड या इमल्सीफाइड दवा या दवाएं होती हैं। इनमें एक सही एंटीमाइक्रोबियल प्रिजर्वेटिव हो सकता है। ऑइंटमेंट मुख्य रूप से स्किन के लिए प्रोटेक्टिव या एमोलिएंट के तौर पर इस्तेमाल होते हैं। मेडिकेटेड ऑइंटमेंट एपिडर्मिस पर या स्किन टिशू की गहरी परतों पर काम करने के लिए या शरीर के फ्लूइड में गहराई तक जाकर दवा छोड़ने के लिए होते हैं।
आंखों में लगाने के लिए जो ऑइंटमेंट होते हैं, उन्हें ऑप्थैल्मिक ऑइंटमेंट कहते हैं। ये ऑइंटमेंट स्टेराइल होते हैं और इनमें जलन नहीं होती। इन ऑइंटमेंट को बनाने में सफेद सॉफ्ट पैराफिन की जगह पीले सॉफ्ट पैराफिन का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। इसका कारण यह है कि सफेद सॉफ्ट पैराफिन में ब्लीचिंग एजेंट के छोटे-छोटे निशान हो सकते हैं, जो आमतौर पर पीले सॉफ्ट पैराफिन को ब्लीच करने के बाद बच जाते हैं। इसलिए सफेद सॉफ्ट पैराफिन आंखों में जलन पैदा कर सकता है।
सही ऑइंटमेंट बेस चुनते समय, शामिल की जाने वाली दवा का असर, उसकी मनचाही प्रकृति और ऑइंटमेंट की स्टेबिलिटी जैसे फैक्टर्स पर विचार किया जाना चाहिए। एक आइडियल ऑइंटमेंट बेस में ये गुण होने चाहिए:
(1) यह इनर्ट, बिना गंध वाला और चिकना होना चाहिए।
(2) यह फिजिकली और केमिकली स्टेबल होना चाहिए।
(3) यह स्किन और शामिल की गई दवाओं के साथ कम्पैटिबल होना चाहिए।
(4) यह ऐसी कंसिस्टेंसी का होना चाहिए कि स्किन पर दबाव डालने पर यह फैल जाए और सॉफ्ट हो जाए।
(5) इससे घाव भरने में देरी नहीं होनी चाहिए।
(6) इससे स्किन में जलन या सेंसिटाइज़ेशन नहीं होना चाहिए।
ऐसा कोई एक ऑइंटमेंट बेस नहीं है जिसमें एक आइडियल ऑइंटमेंट बेस की सभी क्वालिटीज़ हों। इसलिए, ऑइंटमेंट बनाते समय एक से ज़्यादा ऑइंटमेंट बेस का इस्तेमाल करना ज़रूरी हो जाता है।
ऑइंटमेंट बेस को इस तरह बांटा गया है:
1. ओलेजिनस बेस
2. एब्ज़ॉर्प्शन बेस
3. इमल्शन बेस
4. पानी में घुलने वाले बेस।
