ALLIGATION METHOD IN CALCULATIONS

 ALLIGATION METHOD IN CALCULATIONS ::

When the calculation involves mixing of two similar preparations of different strengths to produce a preparation of intermediate strength the alligation method may be used The method is recommended for the purpose of checking the calculations .
For calculation purpose the figures are written as given below ::
The following example illustrates the use of this method ::
Example Prepare 500 g of dilute acetic acid from acetic acid I.P.
Calculation Acetic acid I.P. = 33 % w/w of Acetic acid
Dilute acetic acid = 6% w/w of Acetic acid
Let x be the number of grams of 33 % acetic acid required then as per question ::
33/100*x+0/100 (500-x) = 6/100*500
33x+0(500-x) = 3000
33x +0= 3000
33x=3000
x= 91 g
Number of grams of 33% acetic acid required = 91 g
Number of grams of water required = 500 - 91 = 409 g
Therefore 91.0 g of 33 % acetic acid is required to be mixed with 409 g of water to produce 500 g of 6 % dilute acetic acid .
The above calculation can be checked by alligation method
Acetic acid                                                     Water
33                                                                0
6
6-0                                                             33-6
=6                                                                = 27
This means that 6 parts by weight of acetic acid 33 % w/w when mixed with 27 parts by weight of water it will produce 33 parts by weight of dilute acetic acid 6% Therefore for preparing 500 g of dilute acetic acid
The quantity of 33 % acid required = 500*6
                                                            -----------
                                                                33
                                            = 91 g
The quantity of water required = 500 * 27
                                                    --------------
                                                        33
                                = 409 g

33/100*x+0/100 (500-x) = 6/100*500
33x+0(500-x) = 3000
33x +0= 3000
33x=3000
x= 91 g
--------------
33
= 409 g
