Tincture of iodine is effective for dressing superficial wounds and sterilising skin prior to surgical procedures In absence of organic matter it is an effective germicide even in 1: 20000 dilution Besides being bactericidal it is also a fungicidal and amoebicidal 

Antisyphilitic ::

It is also given daily as sodium or potassium iodide and neoarsphenamine injection It is useful in late stages of syphilis to dissolve the fibrous tissue masses called gumma 

Expectorant :: 

Iodides have useful expectorant actions with disinfection and help expulsion of phlegm from the chest It is said to increase the catarrhal reaction in patients This reaction disappears on increasing the dose 

Thyroid Conditions ::

In high mountainous places like Himalaya and Alps where there is deficiency of iodine in water neck swellings occur which are called Colloid goitre If this is treated with sodium or potassium iodide the swelling gets cured if given at later stage it at least receedes the swelling 

        In early stages hyperthyroidism exophthalmic goitre responds to treatment with sodium iodide or Lugol s iodine Iodine reduces BMR increases weight and reduces high pulse rate Puberty or adolescence colloid goitre also responds to potassium iodide treatment 

In hyperthyroidism B-rays emitted by radioactive iodine are used to destroy the overactive cells of the thyroid Radioactive iodine is also used to control cancer of the thyroid

हाइपरथायरायडिज्म में रेडियोधर्मी आयोडीन द्वारा उत्सर्जित बी-किरणों का उपयोग थायरॉयड की अति सक्रिय कोशिकाओं को नष्ट करने के लिए किया जाता है रेडियोधर्मी आयोडीन का उपयोग थायरॉयड के कैंसर को नियंत्रित करने के लिए भी किया जाता है
