Opium contains about 25 alkaloids which are largely combined with meconic acid The total alkaloidal content of opium is found to be varying from 9 to 20 % The alkaloids of opium are divided into two classes pharmacologically i.e. narcotic and non narcotic alkaloids and chemically as phenanthrene derivatives and benzyl isoquinoline derivatives The important active constituent of opium is an alkaloid morphine which constitutes 8 to 17 % of drug Indian variety contains about 8 to 14 % morphine The other alkaloids of opium are codeine (2.5 to 3.5 % ) noscopine or narcotine ( 5.5 to 7.5 % ) thebaine (1 to 2 % ) and papaverine (about 1 % ) Indian variety contains maximum codeine content as compared to several varieties of opium The morphine molecule has both a phenolic and an alcoholic hydroxyl groups and when acetylated forms diacetyl morphine or heroin Codeine is an ether of morphine (methyl morphine) The less important alkaloids of opium are the narceine codamine lanthopine etc Apart from the alkaloids opium also contains mucilage sugar wax and salts of potassium magnesium and calcium Starch tannin calcium oxalate are not found in opium .

अफीम में लगभग 25 एल्कलॉइड होते हैं जो ज़्यादातर मेकोनिक एसिड के साथ मिले होते हैं। अफीम में कुल एल्कलॉइड की मात्रा 9 से 20% तक पाई जाती है। अफीम के एल्कलॉइड को फार्माकोलॉजिकली दो कैटेगरी में बांटा गया है, यानी नारकोटिक और नॉन-नारकोटिक एल्कलॉइड और केमिकली फेनेंथ्रीन डेरिवेटिव और बेंजाइल आइसोक्विनोलिन डेरिवेटिव। अफीम का ज़रूरी एक्टिव तत्व एक एल्कलॉइड मॉर्फिन है जो दवा का 8 से 17% होता है। भारतीय वैरायटी में लगभग 8 से 14% मॉर्फिन होता है। अफीम के दूसरे एल्कलॉइड कोडीन (2.5 से 3.5%), नोस्कोपिन या नारकोटिन (5.5 से 7.5%), थेबाइन (1 से 2%) और पैपावरिन (लगभग 1%) हैं। भारतीय वैरायटी में कई दूसरी वैरायटी के मुकाबले सबसे ज़्यादा कोडीन होता है। अफीम की किस्में मॉर्फिन मॉलिक्यूल में फेनोलिक और अल्कोहलिक हाइड्रॉक्सिल ग्रुप होते हैं और जब एसिटिलेटेड होते हैं तो डायएसिटाइल मॉर्फिन या हेरोइन बनाते हैं कोडीन मॉर्फिन (मिथाइल मॉर्फिन) का ईथर है। अफीम के कम ज़रूरी एल्कलॉइड हैं नार्सीन, कोडामाइन, लैंथोपिन वगैरह। एल्कलॉइड के अलावा अफीम में म्यूसिलेज, शुगर, वैक्स और पोटैशियम, मैग्नीशियम और कैल्शियम के सॉल्ट भी होते हैं। स्टार्च, टैनिन, कैल्शियम ऑक्सालेट अफीम में नहीं पाए जाते हैं।
