Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by microorganism known as Mycobacterium leprae affecting the skin and nerves resulting in disfigurement and deformity of the affected parts The disease is characterized by glossy corrugated thickened skin with decreased sensation of touch .

        The drugs used in the treatment of leprosy are known as antileprotics .

Leprosy is completely curable disease but needs the treatment for long duration of time Several chemotherapeutic agents including antibiotics are being used at present to treat lepers important amongst them are dapsone DDS ( diamino diphenyl Sulphone ) sulfoxone sodium rifampicin and clofozimine .

    Brahmi (asiaticoside ) and chaulmoogra oil are the drugs from natural (herbal ) origin available for treatment of leprosy .

Hydnocarpus oil is fixed oil obtained from ripe seeds of the plants Hydnocarpus anthelminitica Pierre Taraktogenos kurzil king Hydnocarpus heterophylla kurz and other species of the Hydnocarpus (Family : Flacourtiaceae ) prepared by cold expression method .

Geographical Distribution ::

Chaulmoogra plant is native of Myanmar Thailand and Eastern India it is also found in Bangladesh in india it is grown in Assam and Tripura .

लेप्रोसी एक इन्फेक्शन वाली बीमारी है जो माइकोबैक्टीरियम लेप्री नाम के माइक्रोऑर्गेनिज्म की वजह से होती है। यह स्किन और नसों पर असर डालता है, जिससे प्रभावित हिस्से खराब और बेढंगे हो जाते हैं। इस बीमारी की पहचान चमकदार, मोटी और छूने पर महसूस होने वाली कमज़ोरी वाली स्किन है।

लेप्रोसी के इलाज में इस्तेमाल होने वाली दवाओं को एंटीलेप्रोटिक्स कहा जाता है।

लेप्रोसी पूरी तरह से ठीक होने वाली बीमारी है, लेकिन इसके इलाज में लंबे समय तक चलने की ज़रूरत होती है। आजकल लेपर्स के इलाज के लिए एंटीबायोटिक्स समेत कई कीमोथेरेप्यूटिक एजेंट्स का इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है। इनमें डैप्सोन DDS (डायमिनो डाइफेनिल सल्फोन), सल्फोक्सोन सोडियम, रिफैम्पिसिन और क्लोफोज़िमाइन खास हैं।

ब्राह्मी (एशियाटिकोसाइड) और चौलमूगरा ऑयल कुष्ठ रोग के इलाज के लिए मिलने वाली नेचुरल (हर्बल) दवाएं हैं।
