INDIAN BDELLIUM CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS ::
It contains approximately 60 % of gum 30% of resin 0.5 to 1.5 % of volatile oil about 5 % moisture and 3-4 % of foreign organic matter Volatile oil of the guggul contains myrcene dimyrcene polymyrcene and caryophyllene .
The resin contains therepeutically active steroids as shown under .
Resin also contains sterols known as guggulosterol I II and III .

Alcohol soluble extractive : Not more than 40 %
Ash value : Not more than 5.5 %
Acid - insoluble ash : Not more than 3.5 %

Chemical Test ::
To the ethyl acetate extract of guggul add acetic anhydride boil cool and add 2 ml . of sulphuric acid green colour develops at junction due to steroids .
Uses ::
It is used as anti - inflammatory anti-rheumatic hypolipidemic and hypo cholesteremic drug .
Substitutes ::
Commiphora berryi Commiphora caudata and Commiphora roxburghii also yield oleo - gum resin of commercial importance .

केमिकल टेस्ट ::
गुग्गुल के एथिल एसीटेट एक्सट्रैक्ट में एसिटिक एनहाइड्राइड मिलाएं, उबालें, ठंडा करें और 2 ml सल्फ्यूरिक एसिड मिलाएं। स्टेरॉयड की वजह से जंक्शन पर हरा रंग आ जाता है।
इस्तेमाल ::
इसका इस्तेमाल एंटी-इंफ्लेमेटरी, एंटी-रूमेटिक, हाइपोलिपिडेमिक और हाइपो कोलेस्टेरेमिक दवा के तौर पर किया जाता है।
