Biological Source ::
Guggul is the oleo- gum - resin obtained by the incision of the bark of the plant Commiphora weightii (Arn) Bhand (Commiphora mukul Engl Balsamodendron mukul Hook ) (Family : Burseraceae ) and should contain not less than 1.0 % and not more than 1.5 % guggulosterones ( Z & E ) .
Geographical Distribution ::
The plant guggul (shrub) is found well distributed in india pakistan Baluchistan and Arabia .
The guggul plant is an inhabitant of dry areas of Rajasthan Karnataka Gujarat and Maharashtra it grows to the height of 2 - 3 metres much branched with characteristic silvery and paper like bark - peelings Each plant produces about 0.5 to 1 kg of oleo - gum resin which is collected from january to march every year .
Organoleptic Characters ::
Colour : Brown to pale yellow or dull green .
Odour : Agreeable aromatic and balsamic .
Taste : Characteristic bitter .
Size : 0.5 to 1.00 to 2.5 cm in diameter .
Shape : Rounded or irregular masses or agglomerated tears . Tears are somewhat transparent with waxy surface and brittle in nature Guggul is gummy to touch and tears are normally with fractured surface .
Solubility :: When titrated with water it forms white emulsion it is partly soluble in alcohol .
