RAUWOLFIA CHEMICAL TESTS ::
1. Freshly fractured surface of root of Rauwolfia gives red colouration alongwith medullary - rays when treated with concentrated nitric acid .
2. Reserpine gives violet red colour when treated with solution of vanillin in acetic acid .
Uses ::
The activities of rauwolfia are mainly due to reserpine which has depressant action on central nervous system it produces tranquilizing effect (emotional calmness without producing hypnosis ) and lowers the blood pressure it can be administered orally and has cumulative effect it is also given parenterally in the treatment of hypertension when the oral route is found to be impracticable Reserpine should be used with caution in anxiety depression and in the patients with cardiac arrhythmia myocardial infarction bronchitis asthama or gastric ulcers it has tranquillizing effect rather than hypnotic one The drug is used for extraction of alkaloids like reserpine rescinnamine ajamaline etc and also for the preparation of rauwolfia liquid extract .
Substitutes and Allied Drugs ::
Rauwolfia is substituted with several species like Rauwolfia densiflora Rauwolfia perakensis etc This can be distinguished by the microscopic characters like presence of sclerenchyma Rauwolfia tetraphylla (Rauwolfia canescens ) contains uniform cork abundant sclerides and fibres it contains no rescinnamine The root of Rauwolfia vomitoria contain 5 discontinued bands of sclerenchyma and very large vessels .

1. राउवोल्फिया की जड़ की ताज़ा टूटी हुई सतह, गाढ़े नाइट्रिक एसिड से ट्रीट करने पर लाल रंग के साथ-साथ मेडुलरी-रेज़ देती है।

इस्तेमाल ::
राउवोल्फिया की एक्टिविटी मुख्य रूप से रेसरपाइन की वजह से होती है, जिसका सेंट्रल नर्वस सिस्टम पर डिप्रेसेंट एक्शन होता है। यह ट्रैंक्विलाइजिंग इफ़ेक्ट (हिप्नोसिस पैदा किए बिना इमोशनल शांति) पैदा करता है और ब्लड प्रेशर कम करता है। इसे मुंह से दिया जा सकता है और इसका क्यूमुलेटिव इफ़ेक्ट होता है। इसे हाइपरटेंशन के इलाज में पैरेंट्रल रूप से भी दिया जाता है, जब मुंह से लेना मुमकिन न हो। रेसरपाइन का इस्तेमाल एंग्जायटी, डिप्रेशन और कार्डियक एरिथमिया, मायोकार्डियल इन्फार्क्शन, ब्रोंकाइटिस, अस्थमा या गैस्ट्रिक अल्सर वाले मरीज़ों में सावधानी से करना चाहिए। इसका हिप्नोटिक इफ़ेक्ट के बजाय ट्रैंक्विलाइजिंग इफ़ेक्ट होता है। इस दवा का इस्तेमाल रेसरपाइन, रेसिनामाइन, अजमालिन वगैरह जैसे एल्कलॉइड निकालने और राउवोल्फिया लिक्विड एक्सट्रैक्ट बनाने के लिए भी किया जाता है।
सब्स्टिट्यूट और उससे जुड़ी दवाएं ::
राउवोल्फिया को कई स्पीशीज़ से सब्स्टिट्यूट किया जाता है जैसे कि राउवोल्फिया डेंसिफ्लोरा, राउवोल्फिया पेराकेंसिस वगैरह। इसे स्क्लेरेनकाइमा की मौजूदगी जैसे माइक्रोस्कोपिक कैरेक्टर्स से पहचाना जा सकता है। राउवोल्फिया टेट्राफिला (राउवोल्फिया कैनेसेंस) में एक जैसा कॉर्क, बहुत सारे स्क्लेराइड्स और फाइबर होते हैं, इसमें कोई रेसिनामाइन नहीं होता। राउवोल्फिया वोमिटोरिया की जड़ में स्क्लेरेनकाइमा के 5 अलग-अलग बैंड और बहुत बड़ी वेसल्स होती हैं।
