It is soluble in alcohol 90% ether chloroform and in glacial acetic acid .
Standards ::
For pharmaceutical purposes it should comply with the following standards .
1. Acid value : 100 to 160
2. Reaction : Alcoholic solution is acidic to litmus
3. Ester value : 40 to 95
4. Sap value : 170 to 230
5. Loss on drying : Not more than 4 %
6. Alcohol-insoluble matter : Not more than 5 %

Balsam of tolu contains 12 % to 15 % of free cinnamic acid about 8 % of free benzoic acid 7.5 % of oily liquid (cinnamein) containing benzyl benzoate and benzyl cinnamate The resinous matter which constitutes about 80% of the drug contains chiefly ester of toluresinotannol Small quantities of vanillin and styrol are also reported in the drug The volatile oil obtained by distillation from balsam does not exceed 3 % The tolu oil is yellow liquid with highly fragrant flavour .

टोलू के बालसम में 12 % से 15 % फ्री सिनामिक एसिड, लगभग 8 % फ्री बेंजोइक एसिड, 7.5 % ऑयली लिक्विड (सिनामीन) होता है जिसमें बेंजाइल बेंजोएट और बेंजाइल सिनामेट होता है। दवा का लगभग 80 % हिस्सा बनाने वाले रेजिनस मैटर में मुख्य रूप से टोल्यूरेसिनोटेनॉल का एस्टर होता है। दवा में वैनिलिन और स्टायरॉल की थोड़ी मात्रा भी बताई गई है। बालसम से डिस्टिलेशन से मिलने वाला वोलाटाइल ऑयल 3 से ज़्यादा नहीं होता है। % टोलू तेल एक पीला लिक्विड होता है जिसका स्वाद बहुत खुशबूदार होता है।
