Tulsi leaves are found to contain bright yellow coloured and pleasant volatile oil from 0.1 to 0.9 % The oil content of the drug varies depending upon the type place of cultivation and season of its collection The oil is collected by steam distillation method from leaves and flowering tops Chemically it contains approximately 70% eugenol carvacrol (3%) and eugenol - methyl -ether (20%) it also contains caryophyllin Seeds Contain fixed oil with good drying properties .
The plant is also reported to contain traces of alkaloids saponin tannin an appreciable amount of vitamin C and traces of maleic citric and tartaric acid .
Uses ::
The fresh leaves its juice and volatile oil are used for various purposes The oil is antibacterial and insecticidal The leaves are used as stimulant .

तुलसी के पत्तों में 0.1 से 0.9% तक चमकीले पीले रंग का और अच्छा वोलाटाइल तेल पाया जाता है। दवा में तेल की मात्रा खेती के प्रकार, जगह और इसे इकट्ठा करने के मौसम के आधार पर अलग-अलग होती है। तेल पत्तियों और फूलों के ऊपरी हिस्से से स्टीम डिस्टिलेशन तरीके से इकट्ठा किया जाता है। केमिकल तौर पर इसमें लगभग 70% यूजेनॉल कार्वाक्रोल (3%) और यूजेनॉल-मिथाइल-ईथर (20%) होता है। इसमें कैरियोफिलिन भी होता है। बीजों में फिक्स्ड तेल होता है जिसमें सुखाने की अच्छी प्रॉपर्टीज़ होती हैं।
पौधे में एल्कलॉइड सैपोनिन टैनिन के निशान, विटामिन C की अच्छी मात्रा और मैलिक साइट्रिक और टार्टरिक एसिड के निशान भी पाए जाते हैं।
उपयोग ::
ताज़ी पत्तियों, इसके रस और वोलाटाइल तेल का इस्तेमाल अलग-अलग कामों के लिए किया जाता है। तेल एंटीबैक्टीरियल और कीटनाशक होता है। पत्तियों का इस्तेमाल स्टिमुलेंट के तौर पर किया जाता है।
