 STERCULIA GUM  :: 

Sterculia gum (indian tragacanth ) is used in the industries as a substitute for tragacanth it is dried gummy exudate obtained from the tree Sterculia urens (Sterculiaceae ) it is commercially known as karaya gum it occurs as translucent and irregularly striated white vermiform pieces with acetone odour with ruthenium red it gives pink colour These tests are negative with tragacanth Karaya also differs from tragacanth in that it contains no starch and methoxy groups On acid hydrolysis sterculia yields D- galactose L- rhamnose D- galacturonic acid aldobionic acid acetic acid and an acid trisaccharide it is used as a bulk laxative and in lozenges pastes and denture fixative powders .

स्टर्कुलिया गम (इंडियन ट्रैगाकैंथ) का इस्तेमाल इंडस्ट्री में ट्रैगाकैंथ के सब्स्टीट्यूट के तौर पर किया जाता है। यह स्टर्कुलिया यूरेन्स (स्टर्कुलियासी) पेड़ से मिलने वाला सूखा चिपचिपा एक्सयूडेट है। इसे कमर्शियली कराया गम के नाम से जाना जाता है। यह ट्रांसलूसेंट और अनियमित धारीदार सफेद वर्मीफॉर्म टुकड़ों के रूप में होता है, जिसमें एसीटोन की गंध होती है और रूथेनियम रेड होता है। यह गुलाबी रंग देता है। ये टेस्ट ट्रैगाकैंथ के साथ नेगेटिव होते हैं। कराया ट्रैगाकैंथ से इस मायने में भी अलग है कि इसमें कोई स्टार्च और मेथॉक्सी ग्रुप नहीं होता है। एसिड हाइड्रोलिसिस पर स्टर्कुलिया से D-गैलेक्टोज, L-रम्नोज, D-गैलेक्टुरोनिक एसिड, एल्डोबायोनिक एसिड, एसिटिक एसिड और एक एसिड ट्राइसैकेराइड मिलता है। इसका इस्तेमाल बल्क लैक्सेटिव के तौर पर और लॉज़ेंज, पेस्ट और डेन्चर फिक्सेटिव पाउडर में किया जाता है। अगर ::
